Telefónica already controls almost half of the shares of the operator TVA
Spanish giant Telefónica has bought a 49% stake in Brazilian cable operator TVA through its local Telefónica Brasil Telesp subsidiary.
The Spanish group Telefónica has acquired, through its subsidiary Telesp, 49% percent of the shares of Lemontree Participações, a company that controls 80.1% of the cable operator TVA.
This operation has been able to be carried out after the Brazilian government lifted restrictions on foreign capital in pay TV via cable. In this way, Telefónica would control, going from having 19.99% to 49.99% of TVA shares.
The Spanish operator intends to take full control of the cable operator in case regulator Anatel expands the restrictions again.
In October 2006, Telefónica entered TVA by purchasing from Grupo Abril 19.9% of the cable TV assets in the State of São Paulo, 49% of the cable operations outside of São Paulo and 100% of the MMDS assets. In that agreement, a purchase option was already established on the rest of TVA's assets.
