In Las Vegas, Sony unveils the industry's first 55-inch Full HD self-emitting display prototype that uses LEDs as a light source.

Within the framework of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012), Sony has unveiled the industry's first 55-inch Full HD self-emitting display prototype that uses LED as a light source, called Crystal LED Display.

Crystal LED Display is a self-emitting display that uses exclusive Sony methods to place ultra-thin LEDs in each of the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) colors, equivalent to the number of pixels (approximately six million LEDs to achieve Full HD resolution). The RGB LED light source is placed directly on the front of the screen, improving light usage efficiency.

This technology enables images with better contrast (in bright and dark environments), a greater color gamut, excellent response time for video images and greater viewing angles compared to existing LCD and plasma displays, as well as lower power consumption. Thanks to the structure and manufacturing processes of the panel, Crystal LED Display is also ideal for large screens.

Compared to existing LCD displays, the 55-inch prototype on display at CES features about 3.5 times higher contrast in bright environments, about 1.4 times wider color gamut, and about 10 times faster response time for video images (all values based on current Sony models).
Sony has a wide range of applications planned for its Crystal LED Display including applications for professional and home use. In parallel with its continued development and commercialization of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, Sony will work diligently to bring this new display to market.
