The new XAVC format aims to accelerate the development of 4K in consumer and professional
The XAVC has been developed as an open format, offering a licensing program for other manufacturers in the broadcast and production industry, so that they can develop their own high-quality, high frame rate products.
The new XAVC recording format powered by Sony will be the center of its new 4K products. This 4K format aims to drive the adoption of the 4K format beyond movies, in genres such as television soap operas, entertainment programs, documentaries and commercials.
In addition to widespread applications for the professional HDTV market, Sony has developed the XAVC format to enable the expansion of 4K content into the consumer market. The XAVC format is designed to provide a future codec that can meet the changing requirements of rapidly developing 4K content production and high frame rate HD120P recording.
Sony's XAVC format employs MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 level 5.2, the highest image resolution and video frame rate compression codec based on industry standards.
This format provides a wide variety of operational possibilities for content production, particularly from Proxy to 4K pixel resolutions, intra-frame and extensive GOP structures, up to 1080 50P/60P infrastructure capability.
Developed based on the principles of efficient workflow, evolution and optimized image quality, Sony's XAVC format can support the following content formats:
- 4K (4096 x 2160 and 3840 x 2160), HD and proxy resolution
- MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression
- 12, 10 and 8 bit color depth
- Up to 60fps
- MXF envelope format can be used
- Color sampling 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0
