Sony intends to give new impetus to optical disc storage
The Japanese multinational presents a second generation disk with a capacity of 3.3 TB, thus expanding its ODA (Optical Disc System) ecosystem.
At a time when broadcasters and producers have cloud storage in their sights, Sony is betting on giving new impetus to archiving on optical disc.
On the occasion of NAB, the multinational has presented a second generation disk with a capacity of 3.3 TB (ODC-3300R), thus expanding its ODA (Optical Disc System) ecosystem. During the fair, new units were also announced that will be able to read and write in this format at a higher speed and will have connectivity via USB or fiber.
Sony insists that the optical disk is one of the best solutions for deep content storage since, in its opinion, this medium has a lifespan that would exceed one hundred years.
At this time, broadcasters such as Alabama public television APTV (USA), ATM Grupa (Poland), ATV (Turkey), Beijing Television, China Central Television and China Education Television (in China), San Marino RTV (San Marino) or Sun TV Network Limited (India) are already using Sony's proposal.
On the other hand, in order to achieve greater efficiency based on improved read/write and greater capacity, other broadcasters such as Artear (Argentina), Golf Channel (USA), Korean Broadcasting System (Korea), RTRS (Bosnia Herzegovina) or Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation (Japan) have already begun to introduce the second generation of optical disk.
In the case of Polsat (Poland) they are studying using this new technology as a solution for disaster recovery. In the case of Sony Pictures Television, they are carrying out tests to automate the workflow with ODA solutions as a medium primary file for original film negatives.
