Sony launches Media Lifecycle Service, a managed services proposition that includes digitization, archiving, distribution and monetization capabilities, under a single comprehensive offering.

Sony Media LifecycleSony has set out to help content owners protect and maximize the value of legacy content assets with the launch of Media Lifecycle Service (MLS). By unifying its leading expertise in digitization, storage and archiving, digital content distribution and asset monetization into a single business, Sony believes that broadcasters and other owners of large video libraries are holding untapped content assets at a time when user demand for content has never been higher.

Adam Fry, head of media solutions at Sony Professional Solutions Europe, acknowledges that "the motto 'Content is king' has never made more sense, but it is only true if the content owner is able to manage it efficiently and deliver their content to consumers at the right time, format and device. This is why Sony has launched Media Lifecycle Service."

Fry adds: “We will work collaboratively with clients and help them, at every stage of the content journey, identify high-quality content and guide it through the digitization and monetization lifecycle with the dual objectives of meeting demand for high volume content from existing customers, and generating new revenue streams from unusual content. All are benefits for both the content owner and the client.”

Having already worked on similar projects with clients such as BBC Worldwide, Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony has the necessary capacity and experience. “We have invested in Sony's strong expertise to create a single service that will help our long-term partners experience the value of their content assets,” says Fry.

“Each phase of the service supported by MLS is complex and a relevant task in itself; having a partner who understands the challenges and can guide them through the entire value chain until monetization provides peace of mind and a competitive advantage,” he concludes.

MLS is divided into three service areas and customers can use any or all of its elements at a pace that suits their particular business strategy regarding digitization, which includes Sony's Optical Disc Archive technology, offers the ability to preserve and restore valuable assets, advanced indexing and metadata; cloud-based managed storage and file management allows customers to archive, manage and access their content; and distribution and monetization generate e-commerce opportunities, new revenue streams and new opportunities to engage audiences in 26 languages and 66 countries.
