Samsung Electronics and KT to Demonstrate eMBMS Digital Multimedia Streaming at Mobile World Congress
eMBMS technology, demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress, can improve network efficiency in areas where live streaming is required, such as a large-scale concert venue or sports stadium.
The South Korean giant Samsung Electronics and Korea Telecom KT have marketed for the first time in the world a digital multimedia streaming (DMB) technology service whose definition is ten times higher than the existing DMB.
The technology, intended for development on LTE networks, is called eMBMS (evolved multimedia transmission and service) and has been put into service by KT under the name “Olleh LTE Play”.
Unlike in the past, when to transmit television content to one hundred users simultaneously connected to the same base station the same data had to be transmitted one hundred times, with the new technology a single transmission is sufficient. In this sense, eMBMS technology can improve network efficiency in areas where live transmission is necessary, such as a large-scale concert venue or a sports stadium.
The two South Korean firms have cooperated for a year to commercialize this technology that they will present at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
