The dismissal of Julio Somoano, one of the first measures after the arrival of José Antonio Sánchez to the presidency.

José Antonio Álvarez Gundín

The president of RTVE, José Antonio Sánchez, has presented to the Board of Directors the appointment of José Antonio Álvarez Gundín as the new director of Spanish Television Information Services, replacing Julio Somoano.
Somoano became the head of TVE News in the summer of 2012, replacing Fran Llorente. His mandate has been marked by criticism from political parties and the news council, which spoke of censorship and manipulation.

Born in Ponferrada, José Antonio Álvarez Gundín has a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and a diploma in Sociology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca.

He returns to RTVE after serving as Director of Institutional Relations between 2003 and 2004. He has also been a regular contributor to 'Los Desayunos de TVE', 'El Debate de La 1', 'La Noche en 24 Horas', and '24 Horas' from RNE and 'Hora 25' from Cadena Ser.

In recent years he has been deputy director of Opinion and Economy at La Razón, as well as a columnist. Previously he was deputy director of ABC and director of its Master of Journalism. For ten years he has been a jury for the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
