The consulting firm Futuresource believes that every day more television manufacturers will gravitate towards Android TV.

Samsung Smart Tv

While 90 million smart TVs were sold worldwide in 2013, according to a report by Futuresource Consulting, this figure could rise to 228 million in 2018. This 21% increase could even exceed 30% in some regions.

Jack Wetherill, market analyst at Futuresource Consulting, highlights that "currently, around 80 percent of smart TVs in homes are connected to the Internet, with built-in Wi-Fi and auto-boot. This figure could reach more than 90 percent by 2016."

Based on a sample of 4,000 users, Futuresource has concluded that more than half of connected TV owners are using a service on their smart TV at least once a week, with 40 percent of US users saying they use a service every day.

Wetherill believes that "there is little opportunity for TV brands to monetize apps or content, as consumer interest has been concentrated in free or subscription video, with less interest in other genres or web use in general. Differentiating the offering by offering exclusive content is also a challenge, and there are still very few compelling examples. In addition, the current cost of platform development and support for app developers is proving expensive and not bearing fruit."

In its analysis, this consultancy considers that every day more brands will gravitate towards Android TV. In fact, Sony has already announced that it will launch a proposal under Android next year, as two Chinese manufacturers, TCL and TPVision, have already done. At the other extreme, Samsung has such a large user base that, for the moment, it is allowed to have its own platform and apps, although it is also promoting Tizen OS as an open alternative to Google.

Wetherill maintains that “despite the industry's focus firmly on Ultra High Definition and curved screens, smart TV continues to permeate the market as a value-added feature, with user interface improvements such as voice and gesture recognition or intuitive navigation as strong arguments at the point of sale.”
