ME20F-SH: Canon's new multifunction camera capable of capturing Full HD in extreme light conditions

Canon's new professional camcorder is capable of recording at a sensitivity of more than 4 million ISO (+75 dB) in Full HD.

Canon has announced the launch of the ME20F-SH, a multi-function professional camcorder capable of capturing color images in extremely low-light environments at sensitivities of over 4 million ISO (+75 dB).

The ME20F-SH has been designed to be as small as possible, delivering professional-grade Full HD video. It is intended for specialized applications such as nature and nocturnal wildlife television productions, deep sea or cave explorations, astronomy and surveillance. The possibility of installing the camera in a semi-permanent location, with remote control operation, also means that it can be used by filmmakers dedicated to the recording of documentaries and natural history, for long-term projects and events, which can be recorded with a minimum of personnel. Because it is intended for specialists, and due to the specific demand for this type of product, the ME20F-SH will only be available through a limited number of distributors.

Infrared lighting

Recording video in low-light conditions often requires the use of infrared illumination, a technique that was traditionally only capable of producing black and white images. However, the ME20F-SH offers impressive ultra-high sensitivity performance, being capable of recording Full HD color video with limited noise, even in very low light conditions and without the need to use infrared illumination.

Designed for use in situations where ambient lighting levels are extremely low, the ME20F-SH features a new 35mm, 2.26 megapixel full format CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV4 processor. The sensor's pixel count and readout circuitry use Canon's proprietary technologies to achieve low noise and extremely high sensitivity, capturing subjects illuminated at less than 0.0005 lux. Similar to EOS Cine cameras, the ME20F-SH features Canon Log and Wide DR settings, enabling a wide dynamic range (800%), providing high-quality results in a wide range of ambient lighting conditions, without the need for supplementary lighting.

Connectivity

The ME20F-SH offers several options for connectivity with third-party devices for recording or remote viewing; It is also compatible with the Canon RC-V100 remote control for remote control of the camera.

The new ME20F-SH features a Canon EF mount with Cine Lock, as on the EOS C500 cinema camera, allowing users to take advantage of the company's wide range of interchangeable lenses. By allowing operators to choose the ideal lens based on their specific recording or application needs, taking into consideration factors such as viewing angle and light level, this multifunction camera provides a wide range of recording options.
