After eight years of litigation in the courts, regarding the use of content from Mediaset España channels by YouTube, Google and the media group have sealed peace.
Google/YouTube and Mediaset announced this Wednesday that they have reached a significant collaboration agreement that promises to open new perspectives in the relations between both companies.
The agreement that puts an end to eight years of litigation by creating a collaboration framework for the study of Mediaset España's digital content presence through a partnership with YouTube and Google Play. In addition, both companies assure, “a joint strategy for the protection of content is opened, with maximum respect for the publisher's copyright.”
Mediaset sued Google in 2008, requesting 500 million euros for the alleged illegal dissemination of its content on YouTube. A year later, in 2009, YouTube was sentenced to remove all the group's content from its portal, although the Commercial Court No. 7 of Madrid later absolved the platform of the illicit use of its content. In January 2014, Mediaset appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court.
