This production, based on the expedition that brought the smallpox vaccine to the Americas, is directed by Miguel Bardem.

22 angels

The recording of the TV movie has begun in Galicia 22 angels, a great story based on real events: the expedition led by Dr. Francisco Javier Balmis brought the smallpox vaccine to the Americas at the beginning of the 19th century.

Co-produced by RTVE and Four Luck Banana, with the participation of TVG and Sunrise Pictures, it is based on the novel by Almudena de Arteaga Guardian Angels. Directed by Miguel Bardem, with a script by Alicia Luna, its cast is led by María Castro, Pedro Casablanc and Octavi Pujades.

On the boat in which they undertake the journey, there are 22 children, the carriers of the smallpox vaccine “arm in arm”. Along with them, the director of an orphanage in A Coruña, Isabel Cendal, the person in charge of finding the 22 angels and the person who will take care of them throughout the entire journey. A woman on a ship full of rude sailors, but where Dr. Balmis's assistant, Dr. Salvany, also travels.

Filming has begun in Ferrol (A Coruña), where the ship in which the protagonists will make the trip is docked, a faithful reconstruction of an 18th century frigate that will sail for several days and that will become in fiction the “María Pita”, the ship that set sail from A Coruña transporting the expedition. There will be four weeks of recording in various locations, with natural interiors and exteriors in Galicia, Valencia and Madrid.

22 angels stars Pedro Casablanc (Dr. Balmis), María Castro (Isabel Cendal), Octavi Pujadas (Dr. Salvany), Carlos Santos, Javier Mejía, Jaime Pujol, José Sospedra, Toni Miso, Fran Nortes, José Manuel Seda, Mariana Carballal and the children Camilo Redgrave, Tiago Rodríguez, Xoel Rupar and Nuno Vilela.

At the head of the direction, Miguel Bardem, responsible for recent TV movies on TVE, such as the award-winning Prim, the murder on Calle del Turco o The murder of Carrero Blanco. As responsible for the script, Alicia Luna, founder and director of the Madrid Screenwriting School and winner, among other awards, of a Goya award for best script for I give you my eyes (2004), which he wrote with Icíar Bollaín and for which he also received the Best European Screenplay Award.
