Ang Lee reinvents 3D as we have never seen it before

The premiere of a trailer for the new film 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' at IBC 2016 projected with Christie's Mirage 4KLH in 3D 4K at 120 fps will undoubtedly mark a before and after in the conception we have of stereoscopy until now.

This week, film director Ang Lee has caused a sensation and made history at IBC 2016 by premiering some clips from his latest film Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk in 3D 4K at 120 fps with a brightness of 28 lambert feet per eye.

The projector chosen for this premiere was the Mirage 4KLH from Christie, “the only one in the world capable of showing Ang Lee's film as he conceived it,” according to the director of the IBC Big Screen Experience, Julian Pinn, at the presentation of the screening.

The brightest projector on the market

The Christie Mirage 4KLH with its 120,000 lumens is currently the brightest projector on the market. The resolution and high frame rate of this model are the product of Christie's investment in the development of its TruLife platform, which has a 1.2 gigapixel floating point architecture with which it is possible to combine high resolution and high frame rate. The Mirage 4KLH's laser illumination did the rest.

Regarding audio, the system Dolby Atmos complemented the laser projection for a fully immersive environment.

The director of The Life of Pi o Brokeback Mountain destacó minutos antes de la proyección del avance de su última película que siempre ha pretendido sacar el máximo partido a la tecnología para ponerla al servicio de la narración. Aunque inicialmente el rodaje se planteó a 60 fps finalmente Lee apostó por dar un paso más allá y alcanzar los 120 fps, en 4K estereoscópico.

El resultado de lo que pudimos ver en el RAI Center de Ámsterdam fue realmente espectacular. No solo por el brillo de la pantalla que atrapaba al espectador metiéndole en la escena sino también por contar por fin con un sistema estereoscópico donde es posible olvidarse de las gafas y las molestias habituales en la visión del 3D conocido hasta ahora.

Al frente de la producción tecnológica de mano de Sony Pictures estuvo Scott Barbour, quién optó por rodar con cámaras F65 de Sony utilizando obturadores de 360º que permitían capturar hasta el mínimo detalle en formato RAW.

El uso de la tecnología Trumotion de RealD (que parte de dos polarizadores, uno en el proyector y el otro en las gafas) permitirá además que Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk pueda proyectarse tras su estreno el próximo noviembre en 24, 60 y 120 fps tanto en resolución 2K como 4K en 2D o 3D.

Sin duda alguna, Ang Lee y los proyectores Christie Mirage 4KLH han abierto una nueva era en el cine mostrándonos un 3D desconocido hasta la fecha con una sensación totalmente inmersiva que deja al cine totalmente desnudo. Éste es precisamente un aspecto sobre el que reflexionar ya que es tal el realismo que por vez primera el cine se asemeja al teatro… y, claro, pocos son los actores de la gran pantalla capaces de aguantar el tipo sobre las tablas…
