SES transmits about 50% of the total Ultra HD channels available via satellite
SES continues to promote commercial agreements that enhance Ultra HD, now secured for 21 channels, an estimable figure compared to the eight channels a year ago.
In 2016, the number of HD channels in the SES fleet grew by 7% to 2,495 channels. Today, 33% of SES' total 7,538 channels are in HD and SES carries 27% of all HD channels globally. Additionally, more than 60% of all channels in the SES fleet are transmitted using the MPEG-4 compression standard.
In Europe, the trend related to the growing penetration of HDTV was a key factor for the development of High Definition in SES and the number of these channels grew by 14% to exceed 750. A scenario that is complemented by the growth of HDTV in the American continent.
SES also continues to promote commercial agreements that promote Ultra HD, now secured for 21 channels, an estimable figure compared to the eight channels a year ago. Today, SES transmits about 50% of the total Ultra HD channels available via satellite.
In 2016, the acquisition of RR Media and the subsequent creation of MX1 through a merger with SES Platform Services reinforced the launch of new HDTV and Ultra HD channels in Europe and North America, as well as accelerated growth of the video business in emerging markets.
The launch of the SES-9 satellite and the continued development of the HD and Ultra HD business were important factors in supporting SES's growth in Asian markets, where the company applies its differentiated strategy. The launch of the SES-10 and SES-15 satellites later this year will provide further growth potential for America.
Ferdinand Kayser, Commercial Director of SES, highlights that "through the growth of its channel offering and significant acquisitions during 2016, SES is exceptionally well placed to take advantage of major growth opportunities, especially in new and emerging markets. Our current launch program provides dynamism to that future growth. With more and more channels broadcast in HD and Ultra HD, 2017 and the years to come will mean continued growth and development in the SES video segment."
