Planeta will move to Madrid in the event of a unilateral declaration of independence
The now deceased president of the publishing group anticipated it in 2012: “if Catalonia becomes independent, Grupo Planeta will have to leave…”. Now, its Board of Directors puts these words in black on white.
As the now deceased José Manuel Lara already anticipated at the end of 2012 to the then president of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, "if Catalonia becomes independent, Grupo Planeta will have to leave... There is no publishing business that has its headquarters in a foreign country that speaks another language. It is absurd. The headquarters would have to go to Zaragoza, Madrid or Cuenca."
The words of the then president of the Planeta group, Atresmedia and editor of the newspaper La Razón are again more topical than ever today when it has become known that the Board of Directors of the publishing group has decided to “move its registered office to Madrid if there is a unilateral declaration of independence in Catalonia.”
The Board "has taken this decision in view of the legal uncertainty that would arise and to protect the interests of its shareholders, employees and the business project." The transfer of the registered office will not entail movement of employees since the group has operational headquarters in various cities in Spain.
Since the founding of Planeta in Barcelona by José Manuel Lara Hernández, in 1949, the group has become a multinational that combines a solid business tradition with a great capacity for innovation and a European and international vocation, with a particularly prominent presence in Spain, France, Portugal and Latin America.
Planeta is a major shareholder of the newspaper La Razón and Atresmedia, which includes the television channels Antena 3, LaSexta, Neox, Nova and Mega; the radio stations Onda Cero, Europa FM and Melodía FM; film and television production; online television and film portals, and multimedia advertising management (television, radio and internet).
