For the second consecutive year, robotics Robe have played a key role in the broadcast of the talent show X Factor in the United Kingdom, highlighting the new MegaPointe multipurpose luminaire. For six weeks, lighting designer Tim Routledge has created impressive atmospheres that have enveloped the contestants in a new edition of the now legendary ITV show that will reach its finale next weekend at the Wembley Arena.

On this occasion the program has been broadcast for the first time from the LH2 Studios in Park Royal, northwest of London, and a total of 314 Robe luminaires have been used in its production, including 43 MegaPointes, 112 Spikies, 52 Spiider LED wash beams, 37 BMFL Blades, 34 of the new LEDBeam 150s, 35 onePATT and a BMFL RoboSpot.

The new creative team The Squared Division along with director Julia Knowles wanted to give a sense of immersion to the show, so the 3mm high-definition LED screens offered a wide, seemingly continuous look, with some discreet interruptions that were filled with hidden lighting.

A channel beneath the main screen and small gaps between the LED surfaces were the starting points for Tim's lighting design. Their goal was to keep the hardware largely hidden, but carefully positioned achieving a perfect balance between video displays and lighting.

In addition, this year 48 units of Robe Halos were included for week five when they were used in the performance of Irish brothers Sean and Conor Price, who performed their own version of the Jimi Hendrix classic All Along The Watchtower.

When Tim Routledge saw the new MegaPointe for the first time at the beginning of the year, he was “really impressed with its capabilities as a 'Swiss Army Knife' of light.”

On stage, this year a large circular screen was arranged, with twenty MegaPointes rigged around its perimeter, while the other 23 were distributed around the main lighting platform.
The MegaPointe's massive brightness and functionality helped evoke the dynamics and diversity of the "domestic" lighting system, as Tim and programmer/operator Tom Young relentlessly maintained the new looks as the series developed.
