Samsung The Wall

Samsung Electronics has presented The Wall, the world's first 146-inch MicroLED modular TV, at its annual First Look event taking place during CES 2018 in Las Vegas. The 146-inch modular, self-emitting MicroLED TV display has been showcased alongside Samsung's latest innovations in display technology, demonstrating how the TV is evolving to offer consumers an exceptional viewing experience while serving as a smart connected hub to enhance everyday life.

This year's First Look event, which was attended by more than 300 media and influencers from around the world, included Jonghee Han, president of Visual Display at Samsung, and Dave Das, senior vice president of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics America. The two outlined Samsung's vision of the future, a future in which television screens deliver brilliant images and evolve to integrate seamlessly into people's lives.

Jonghee Han, president of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said: "The world's first modular MicroLED consumer TV, 'The Wall', represents another breakthrough. It can adapt to any size and offers truly incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. We are excited about this advancement in our roadmap to the future of televisions, and also about the extraordinary viewing experience it offers to consumers."

MicroLED, the screen of the future

The modular television The Wall from Samsung, 146 inches and with MicroLED technology, offers incredible definition without restrictions on size, resolution or shape. It is a television with self-emitting LED technology on a micrometer (µm) scale. That is, they are physically much smaller LEDs than the current ones and they also produce light on their own.

MicroLED technology incorporated into the television The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or backlight panels, while offering consumers the best viewing experience. Additionally, the MicroLED display excels in durability and effectiveness, including maximum light efficiency, light source life and power consumption, setting the standards for future display technologies.

With a bezel-less, module-based design, The Wall also exemplifies how consumers can customize the size and shape of their TV to meet their needs. “The Wall” can be adapted to different purposes, including creating a wall display for multiple spaces.

Artificial Intelligence for 8K images

Samsung also introduced the world's first QLED TV with 8K AI technology, which will be launched internationally, starting in Korea and the United States, during the second half of 2018. This technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) to upscale content available in standard definition to 8K resolution. To do this, it uses a patented algorithm that automatically adjusts the screen resolution based on the properties of each scene, improving image quality for each scene and easily transforming any type of content, from any source, into high-resolution 8K content.

This 8K solution maximizes the viewing experience through several new aspects: improved detail, to enrich standard definition content; noise reduction; the contour recovery function, which outlines objects on the screen more clearly; and automatically adjusting sound based on content, such as sporting events or music concerts.

Smart TV

At the First Look event, Samsung also unveiled the enhanced connected features of its 2018 Smart TVs, including Bixby, SmartThings and Universal Guide.

Bixby is the intelligent assistant developed by Samsung that facilitates user interaction with the television thanks to its intuitive user experience (UX) and its extensive voice analysis capabilities. Samsung's 2018 Smart TVs will also facilitate connectivity and interconnection between devices thanks to SmartThings, the hub of Samsung's IoT (Internet of Things) platform. SmartThings offers an even easier way to control your TV and sync your devices. 2018 will also see the launch of Universal Guide, the advanced TV programming guide that automatically recommends shows and content based on user preferences.

A wide selection of other products were also on display at First Look 2018, including 8K-AI technology, 4K HDR gaming, HDR10+, the new Smart TV experience and many more. The various areas of First Look 2018 offered attendees the opportunity to experience some of Samsung's most exciting television innovations.
