At MWC 2018, the operator will demonstrate how it faces challenges such as 5G or the distribution of 4K content and will reveal details of its multi-operator solution for the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which provides mobile broadband connectivity with high levels of quality to spectators.

One more year, Cellnex Telecom participate in a new edition of Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018), the global meeting point for the mobile communication sector, in which the operator has participated uninterruptedly for twelve years.

In this edition, which will take place from February 26 to March 1 at Fira Barcelona, ​​the main European wireless telecommunications infrastructure operator, will present at its stand (CS64-Congress Square, between pavilions 4 and 5), its positioning in the deployment of 5G networks and its extensive presence in Europe, with more than 24,000 sites, including Small Cells and DAS (distributed antenna systems) nodes, located in six European countries: Spain, Italy, Holland, France, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

The company offers multi-operator mobile connectivity solutions to respond to the high demand for coverage in spaces with a high concentration of users, such as football stadiums, shopping centers, metro lines and city centers.

Cellnex designs, installs and manages infrastructures based on Small Cells and DAS (Distributed Antenna System) that allow all mobile operators to offer mobile broadband connectivity to their customers in those spaces where until now there was saturation in the service due to the high demand for data traffic.

In Europe, forecasts indicate that the five most populated countries in the European Union, including Spain, will deploy between 200,000 and 500,000 small cells until 2020. In Spain the range will oscillate between 30,000 and 75,000.

Cellnex connects the Wanda Metropolitano

The new Atlético de Madrid stadium Wanda Metropolitano It has been since last July first fully multi-operator and multi-band stadium in Spain. Cellnex has deployed a DAS (Distributed Antenna System) system, a network of shareable small-cells, which allows all mobile operators to offer mobile broadband connectivity of the highest quality and capacity to all their customers.

The deployment of this infrastructure in the football stadium improves user experience and avoids the lack of capacity and communication that usually occurs in areas of high demand for connectivity due to the agglomeration of a large number of simultaneous users.

The Wanda Metropolitano stadium project is a flexible and neutral solutiona, for voice and data operators operating in Spain. In addition, it is scalable and is therefore prepared to respond to the demand for greater data traffic in the future. Through a single shared network of antennas and equipment, Cellnex Telecom offers 2G, 3G and 4G coverage to all operators who wish to offer this real and mobile broadband service to their customers.

The individual infrastructure of each of the operators is received and managed in the Cellnex Technical Room, which is responsible for its distribution through the small cell network to offer total coverage in the venue – stands, boxes, corridors – and the surrounding areas, allowing the fan effective connectivity before entering the stadium.

Cellnex has installed for this more than 200 antennas, mimicked in the stadium equipment and nearly 90 remote units as well as more than 10 kilometers of fiber optics.

The solution model developed by Cellnex for the Club Atlético de Madrid is exportable in all those venues or areas that have a high demand for connectivity, such as hospitals, shopping centers, office buildings or urban areas that receive many visitors.

In this area, Cellnex already offers this service in the San Siro football stadiums in Milan and Juventus in Turin, the subways in Milan, Genoa and Brescia, Milan-Malpensa airport, high-speed tunnels and the historic center of Milan.

Latest advances in 4K

The operator completes its presence at Mobile World Congress with various demonstrations of its range of solutions developed for the smart city environment, through its Internet of Things network, such as remote meter reading, control of manhole covers or control of parking spaces.

In the audiovisual field, Cellnex works on the development of services and technical solutions around 4K and on this occasion, in addition to showing content through its channel in tests, it will show HbbTV applications in the field of viewer interaction (voting, Start Over...)

Active role in the development of 5G

Cellnex occupies a place of reference in the development of 5G in Europe as indicated by its leadership in the framework of various European projects related to this technology.

  • 5G-City: project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 program that aims to evaluate 5G technologies through very specific pilot projects in the European cities of Barcelona, ​​Bristol and Lucca. The idea is to validate different use cases provided by a neutral operator.
  • FLEXNET: European project Celtic-Plus and coordinated by Cellnex and financed by CDTI, oriented to the field of surveillance and emergencies, and among others, it will develop specific applications for border control, security of port areas and location of people.
  • LEAN: European Celtic-Plus project financed by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda that aims to use 5G technologies to define an architecture that is flexible enough to be deployed under ultra-low cost requirements and at the same time offer broadband Internet access in rural areas of emerging countries.
  • Veo5G: project coordinated by Cellnex and financed by CDTI, which aims to provide the bases to a neutral operator or infrastructure provider so that they can provide their 5G infrastructure (access network, network core, management, etc.) to third parties, so that they can create new instances of virtualized services to the devices of neutral operators. Within the framework of the Mobile World Congress, Cellnex, in collaboration with the University of Vigo, will carry out technical demonstrations of the development of this project.
  • 5GON: project funded by the Generalitat of Catalonia with the objective of developing a multi-operator 5G solution to validate services in the Neutral Operator area.
  • RESISTO: European H2020 project that aims to protect critical telecommunications infrastructure from the point of view of prevention, detection, mitigation and response. Cellnex leads the working group that analyzes security in future 5G networks and has the support of the Civil Guard as an advisor.
  • V2XArch: project funded by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda for the design of a complete connected autonomous vehicle platform, which includes a field validation trial.
  • Eskala 4.0: project funded by the Basque Government that aims to analyze vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure technologies in the airport environment.
  • Solare 2RF: project financed by the Basque Government that aims to find energy efficiency solutions in the company's telecommunications sites.
