Huelva recognizes Jesús Hermida with an audiovisual center

RTVE, the City Council and the Huelva Press Association are promoting the Jesús Hermida Communication Center that will open later this year in the capital of Huelva.

Spanish Radio Television has signed a collaboration agreement this Monday with the Huelva City Council and the city's Press Association, for the creation of the Jesús Hermida Communication Center. El proyecto homenajea al periodista, estrechamente vinculado con la Corporación pública durante muchos años en su dilatada vida profesional. Además de participar en la puesta en marcha del proyecto, RTVE cederá documentos audiovisuales y equipos para su exhibición en el museo, que abrirá sus puertas en los próximos meses.

The president of the RTVE Corporation, Jose Antonio Sanchez; el alcalde de Huelva, Gabriel Cruz Santana y el presidente de la Asociación de la Prensa de Huelva, Rafael J. Terán, han dado el primer paso para la creación del futuro Centro de la Comunicación Jesús Hermida, con la firma de un convenio de colaboración en Prado de Rey. El acto, conducido por el director de Comunicación y Relaciones Institucionales de RTVE, Manuel Ventero, ha contado con la presencia de la viuda del periodista, Begoña Fernández, y compañeros de profesión.

The signing was held in an emotional event that remembered the figure of Hermida and her role in the world of communication. The president of RTVE, José Antonio Sánchez, has indicated that this signing has been, more than a tribute, “an act to confirm the importance and value that Jesús Hermida has for us, who is simply a reference point in radio and television in Spain, with a history linked to RTVE. This house, where he was born journalistically, would be difficult to understand without Jesús Hermida.”

Su viuda, Begoña Fernández, ha destacado cómo en este acto se han aunado “los dos grandes amores de la vida de Jesús Hermida, su querida y añorada Huelva, a la que siempre sintió que perteneció y Radiotelevisión Española, una de las grandes pasiones de su vida donde dejó lo mejor de sí mismo. Se sentiría extraordinariamente orgulloso de volver a Huelva de la mano de su alcalde, a ponerle nombre a este centro de comunicación de su ciudad”.

The event was led by the Communications Director of RTVE, Manuel Ventero, who recalled the birth of the vocation of the Huelva communicator, who “was never indifferent to injustices and for whom the work of Juan Ramón Jiménez, Platero and me, was his favorite literary universe. He looked for an explanation for things in his profession and his life. Hermida framed all the events in an enviable way, providing the viewer with the necessary data, without judging.”

An active installation

The mayor of Huelva, Gabriel Cruz Santana, has spoken of the new Communication center, which will be “a space for knowledge, study, leisure and participation, un espacio donde ir a abrirnos a nuevas experiencias y aprender que, con determinación, ambición y respeto, se consigue el progreso”.

En ese sentido, el presidente de la Asociación de la Prensa de Huelva, Rafael J. Terán, ha añadido que sera “una instalación activa, para que que los escolares y estudiantes se acerquen a ella, con un centro de documentación, un aula de estudio… Vamos a ayudar a entender desde Huelva la evolución de la comunicación y a entender el periodismo de verdad”.

El Centro de la Comunicación Jesús Hermida se pondrá en marcha en los próximos meses y se ubicará en un edificio de titularidad municipal que se conoce como ‘Centro de Visitantes Huelva, Puerta del Atlántico’. El proyecto contará con una exposición permanente dedicada a la trayectoria profesional de Jesús Hermida y mantendrá exhibiciones temporales y actividades didacticas y divulgativas.

RTVE contribuirá a los fondos del centro con equipos que han sido utilizados históricamente por Radio Nacional de España. También cederá temporalmente para su difusión en el centro, los derechos de producciones de radio y televisión en las que Hermida participó. Entre este material se encuentran interviews that are the history of journalism in Spain, like the one he made for the American journalist Walter Conkrite or the actress Bette Davis during the years when he was a correspondent for TVE in New York.

Hermida: reference on radio and TV

Jesus Hermida joined TVE in 1967 and a year later he took charge of the New York correspondent. He remained there for eleven years and left indelible broadcasts in the memory of the Spanish, such as the arrival of man to the Moon.

In 1978 he returned to Spain to be director, presenter and interviewer of spaces such as Close Up, Chronicle 3 o On Turn.

After a stint on the radio, far from public television, he returned to TVE in 1987, to create a new school with In the morning, the first morning magazine show that was made on Spanish television.

In 1990 he presented, always with his peculiar style, the second edition of the Telediario.

After his time as director of Antena 3 Televisión and Castilla-La Mancha TV in the first years of the new century, in 2006, he returned to TVE to present The image of your life and later The TV of your life.

Hermida fue fundador y primer presidente de la Academia de las Ciencias y las Artes de la Televisión de España, que le concedió el premio Toda una Vida por su trayectoria profesional. Fue galardonado con tres premios Ondas, tres Antenas de oro, dos TPs de oro y el Premio Nacional de Televisión

En enero de 2013 realizó su última labor para TVE con una entrevista a don Juan Carlos, en La noche del rey, con motivo del 75 cumpleaños del entonces Jefe del Estado.
