HBO begins production of several original series with European directors
Lukas Moodysson in Sweden and Danis Tanović in Croatia have already started filming 'Gösta' and 'Success' respectively, while the co-production 'Hackerville' has also begun filming between Romania and Germany.
Three new original series with the seal of HBO Europe They have started production in recent weeks: Gosta, created by renowned Swedish screenwriter and director Lukas Moodysoon; Success, directed by the winner of a Oscar Danis Tanović (No Man’s Land); y Hackerville, an international thriller halfway between Romania and Germany. All of them will be released simultaneously with their European debut on HBO Spain, which, for its part, is developing the adaptation of the novel Patria, among other projects.
Oscar winner Danis Tanović is at the helm of Success, HBO's first original series in the Adriatic region, a complex six-episode drama set in modern-day Zagreb that follows the interconnected stories of four strangers who will have to unite irrevocably as a result of a violent event. As the consequences of their actions are about to affect their lives, these four ordinary people, from different backgrounds, decide to fight to regain control of their lives. Created and written by Marjan Alčevski, Success was selected as the winning project of the first call organized by HBO Adria to discover new talents among scriptwriters in the region. The six-episode series began filming in the Croatian capital at the beginning of March and is scheduled to premiere in the fall of this year.
HBO Nordic's first original production is an eight-episode comedy created by Lukas Moodysson's, Gosta, which has already begun filming in the forests of Småland, southern Sweden. Gösta is a 28-year-old child psychologist who gets his first job in a small rural town where he moves from Stockholm to live in a cabin in the middle of the forest. Gösta aspires to be the kindest person in the world and offers his help to everyone he meets. Sometimes it turns out well, sometimes it doesn't... Described by Moodysoon himself as "a comedy with notes of Dostoevsky; as fun and as serious as possible", Gosta will be released in 2019.
Hackerville, a fast-paced Romanian-German thriller about a network of hackers and the investigators in charge of hunting them down, is currently filming between Timisoara, Bucharest and Frankfurt. When she discovers the origin of a hacker attack on a large German bank on a network in Romania, BKA cybercrime expert Lisa Metz is assigned from Frankfurt to Timisoara, her city of origin, to work hand in hand with local investigators led by Romanian police officer Adam Sandor. When Lisa and Sandor track down a brilliant hacker codenamed Dark Mole, the three of them find themselves caught in an emotional triangle that begins with a deep distrust of each other, but leads to dependence on each other. Hackerville was created by Ralph Martin and Deutschland 83 co-creator Joerg Winger and is produced by renowned Romanian director Cristian Mungiu and Tudor Reu through the Bucharest-based production company Mobra Films. The six-episode series, HBO Europe's first original fiction co-production with German channel TNT Serie, will premiere in fall 2018.
Another upcoming project is the original Polish series Blinded by the lights, an adaptation of the popular novel of the same name by Jakub Zulczyk. Set in Warsaw and focused on seven days in the life of a cocaine trafficker just before Christmas. A noir thriller co-written by Zulczyk and director Krzysztof Skonieczny (Hardcore Disco), who contributes his risky authorial version.
Throughout the fall, new seasons of highly successful series will also premiere on HBO Europe, such as the third and final season of the Hungarian Golden Life, and the third season of the Czech adaptation of In treatment.
HBO Europe has been producing quality dramas in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Poland since 2010. In 2016 it expanded its activities to Scandinavia and Spain, and in 2017 to the Adriatic region.
