The main objective of this pilot test has been to verify the signal characteristics and propagation of mmWave signals in different environments.

5G

Rohde & Schwarz together with the telecommunications operator China Mobile and the mobile platform provider MediaTek have carried out a technical test to check the response of mmWave signals in a 5G environment. The main objective has been to verify the signal characteristics and propagation of mmWave signals in different environments, both indoors and outdoors, and to investigate the effect that beam tracking and antenna switching have on maintaining signal stability.

In technical tests, a vector signal generator R&S SMW200A de Rohde & Schwarz simuló la señal de enlace descendente de las estaciones base. El dispositivo bajo prueba (DUT) era un terminal prototype MTK mmWave. This prototype terminal, approximately the size of a typical mobile phone, uses highly integrated antenna technology with beam tracking and beam shaping capabilities.

Rohde & Schwarz, China Mobile y Mediatek: pruebas 5GHe shielding effect It is a phenomenon used to describe how different materials, placed in the path of signals transmitted by millimeter waves, interfere with the reception of the signals. In technical tests, the shielding effects of glass, wood, textiles, metal, plants and especially the influence of direct shielding of the human body were investigated by placing them between a trumpet antenna (consisting of a trumpet-shaped metal waveguide to direct radio waves into a beam) and the DUT.

The test result indicates that the mmWave signal may be seriously affected by the shielding effect of objects. Protection of the human body may cause signal attenuation of up to 10-20 dB. To solve this problem, further optimization of the terminal and the network is required. For example, antenna designers may need more flexible solutions, such as multi-antenna arrays that allow them to discover the strongest signal when switching antennas.

5G mmWaves can offer many benefits, including a Higher bandwidth and higher transfer speed de datos.
