The Quirino White Paper presents an exhaustive map of Ibero-American animation in Annecy
It offers an exhaustive x-ray of the animation sector in the 23 countries that comprise the Ibero-American region made up of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Andorra.
The festival and the market Annecy, the main event for international animation, has served as the framework for the presentation of the Quirino White Book of Ibero-American Animation, an initiative of the Quirino Awards in collaboration with ICEX, Diboos, Egeda, Crea SGR, Safe Creative, Tenerife Film Commission, La Liga, Welaw and LatAm cinema and film associations and institutes from all over Latin America.
The presentation took place on Tuesday, June 11 in this city in the French Alps, and there the first contents of this study were made public, which seeks to "value the animation sector and analyze its shortcomings." The presentation was given by José Luis Farias (Quirino Awards), Zulay Rodriguez (Tenerife Film Commission), Carlos Biern (DIBOOS) and Silvia Barraclough (ICEX).

The second phase of content presentation will take place during the Pixelatl festival (Cuernavaca, Mexico, September 3-7, 2019), where in addition to announcing the rest of the chapters, the printed edition of the publication will be presented.

Another of the chapters presented at Annecy is the one dedicated to analyzing the situation of women directors in Ibero-American animation (Women directors in Ibero-American animation: the future will be feminist or it will not be). The study reveals alarming data: of the nearly 300 released films recorded in the Ibero-American region, less than twenty are directed by women, and less than ten are co-directed by at least one woman and one man. An issue that helps focus on representativeness and the universes and characters that are told, both for children, youth and adults; and highlights the gender gap in the industry.
Among the contents that will be presented in the second phase include separate chapters dedicated to analyzing the training offer (Training: the foundations of regional animation of the future) and the legal aspects of Ibero-American co-productions. Four case studies will also be included with the aim of reflecting the diversity and richness of Ibero-American creators and studies (Zumbastic Studios: co-producing Latin American dreams in papermotion, Fosfenos Media: exporting children's educational content from the capital of salsa, Ánima Estudios: the engine of animation in Latin America, y Alê Abreu: traveling authorial animation in the industrial jungle); a chapter to analyze the boom that animation is experiencing in Tenerife that has motivated the launch of the Tenerife Isla Cartoon brand, and a calendar of events dedicated to animation in the 23 countries analyzed.
The Quirino White Book of Ibero-American Animation has the support of ICEX, Diboos, Egeda, Crea SGR, Safe Creative, Tenerife Film Commission, La Liga, Welaw and LatAm cinema as well as the collaboration of film institutes and associations of producers and creators from all over Ibero-America.
New talents in Ibero-American animation
The presentation of the Quirino White Paper has been a true meeting point for Ibero-American animation in Annecy. After the progress of the first chapters of the publication, it was the turn to highlight that they have the Quirino Awards as a common denominator: The Ibero-American Animation League and the Quirino Talent Clan Award.
The first of them is a joint initiative of the Quirino Awards, the Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) and Animation! (Argentina) who is present in Annecy with two little birds, winning project of the first call of La Liga. Co-produced by the Uruguayan Palermo Studio and the Argentine Can Can Club, this series project directed by Alfredo Soderguit and Alejo Schettini was awarded in Animation! of Ventana Sur 2018. After its presentation in the last edition of the Quirino Awards 2019, two little birds He travels to Annecy where he will have his presentation in the MIFA Pitches section. The project, which has just added the French company Autour de Minuit as co-producer, will culminate its international journey at the Pixelatl festival in Mexico next September.
With the aim of promoting the Ibero-American presence in Annecy, La Liga also presented a calendar that brings together all the Ibero-American activities - screenings, pitchings and conferences - at the French event and which can be downloaded here.
Finally, it was the turn of the Clan Talento Quirino Award contest, an initiative launched by Clan (RTVE's children's channel) and its international signal distributed throughout Latin America. Open to young Ibero-American creators between 18 and 30 years old, applicants will be able to present ideas for animated short films with the motto What makes us equal. This contest aims to support young creators so that their idea becomes a reality and make visible the cultural wealth of the Ibero-American region. For this, RTVE/Clan Internacional will produce the short film with a budget of up to €6,000 and will make the resulting work visible throughout Ibero-America in collaboration with the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation. Scripts must be aimed at an audience of 4 to 8 years old. The call to register scripts ends on July 8.
