The Quirino Awards for Ibero-American animation open the call for their third edition
The event will recognize Ibero-American animation in nine categories, including video game animation for the first time. Registration will be open until December 12.
Los Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation have opened their call for the various categories of their third edition, which will be held on the days April 16, 17 and 18, 2020.
The initiative, which for the third consecutive year seeks to highlight the talent and the Ibero-American animation industry, receives animated works from the 23 countries in the region that have been released between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. The call includes nine categories: feature film, series, short film, school short film, commissioned work, sound design and original music, visual development, animation design and - for the first time - animation of video game.
Works whose original language of expression is mostly Spanish, Portuguese or other non-hegemonic languages spoken in the Ibero-American region may be submitted to the call. Works from Ibero-American production companies that are made directly in other languages may also participate. The works must be submitted through the Festhome platform before December 12 at 11:59 p.m. (Spanish time).
From among all the nominated works, there will be six nominees per category, which will be announced at the beginning of 2020. Then, an international jury will choose three finalists in each category, who will be eligible for the recognitions that will be awarded at the ceremony that will take place on April 18.
In 2019, the Colombian feature film Virus Tropical by Santiago Caicedo, the Brazilian series Jorel's Brother – Be Broccoli by Juliano Enrico and the short Guaxuma by the Brazilian Nara Normande, were the works recognized in the main categories.
In parallel with the awards, the organization aims to continue generating networks and promoting the circulation of works on both sides of the ocean. To this end, a new edition of the Ibero-American/World Co-production and Business Forum and the International Congress of Ibero-American Animation will be developed. Aimed at animation professionals, these activities will take place on April 18 and 19 and will bring together the animated sectors of Latin America, Portugal, Andorra and Spain. The second edition brought together 300 professionals from 20 countries, who participated in more than 650 B2B meetings.
An active platform
Since its first edition in 2018, the Quirino Awards have become a reference platform for the promotion of Ibero-American animation and the meeting between professionals from the region. In 2019, the event organization was presenting the awards and the Co-production Forum at the Annecy (France), Pixelatl (Mexico), Ventana Sur (Argentina) and 3D Wire (Spain) festivals. In addition, the organization is behind the launch of the Quirino Awards White Paper for Ibero-American Animation. This publication, which is available for download in Spanish or English on the Quirino Awards website, includes a database that includes associations, production houses, training centers and animation events in the 23 countries that comprise the Ibero-American region made up of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Andorra.
The Quirino are also part of the Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) and Animation! (Argentina) of the Ibero-American Animation League, an alliance designed to promote projects in the region internationally. The winning project of the first call of La Liga was “Dos pajaritos”, a series co-produced by the Uruguayan Palermo Studio and the Argentine Can Can Club, and directed by Alfredo Soderguit and Alejo Schettini, which was presented, with the support of this alliance, at the Annecy and Pixelatl festivals.
Another of the initiatives supported by the Quirinos is the CLAN Young Talent Award, an award organized together with the CLAN International RTVE channel to promote young Ibero-American creators. In its first edition, this competition for ideas for animated short films awarded the project “Mundo Menudo” by Irene Chica (Spain).
The next event where the Quirino Awards will participate is Animation! from Ventana Sur (Buenos Aires, December 2 to 6) where they will participate in a round table together with other representatives of animation industry events in which they will reflect on the state of the situation in Latin America and analyze new ways to continue promoting the region internationally.
