The SGAE creates an Audiovisual Division to offer comprehensive and specialized management to its members

The management entity currently has almost 12,000 scriptwriters, directors and audiovisual musicians who represent more than 85% of the national repertoire.

The Board of Directors of the General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE) has agreed to the creation of the Audiovisual Division, which will offer a comprehensive, autonomous, specialized and highly qualified service to the almost 12,000 directing partners, scriptwriters and audiovisual musicians who represent more than 85% of the national repertoire. It is a historic demand of the Audiovisual College, which has had the impetus and support of the president of the SGAE, Pilar Jurado, and the Board of Directors of the entity.

The vice president of the Audiovisual College, Antonio Onetti, has coordinated the Audiovisual Division project, which involves the grouping of all the services that the SGAE provides to the audiovisual community in a single administrative and autonomous unit. The purpose of this organizational change, of deep internal and external significance, is optimize collection mechanisms, shorten distribution times and confront, in a coordinated manner and taking advantage of internal resources, the changes that are occurring in the film, television and digital environment markets.

Con el objetivo de maximizar la eficacia y agilidad de los procesos, esta nueva unidad contará con un equipo de profesionales especializados y provenientes de distintas áreas de la SGAE, bajo la dirección de Fabia Buenaventura, en la actualidad Gerente del Área Audiovisual, con dependencia directa de la Dirección General de SGAE.

De esta nueva estructura se beneficiarán no sólo los socios del Colegio Audiovisual sino también las sociedades extranjeras con las que se mantienen acuerdos de representación y/o reciprocidad. Este modelo que ahora se implanta en SGAE es seguido por otras grandes entidades multi repertorio europeas en el marco de la creciente competencia del sector.

La unidad gestionará, así, todos los processes related to audiovisual rights, such as the registration of works, contracts, documentation, distribution, rates, relations with partners and foreign companies, complaints, market analysis and the development of our own IT tools to respond to the specificity of the sector.

The SGAE, which in its last financial year brought in nearly 315 million euros, currently has almost 12,000 members of screenwriters, directors and audiovisual musicians who represent more than 85% of the national repertoire with a collection that exceeded 30 million. Since 2012, the Spanish entity, which in 2019 celebrates its 120th anniversary, has invested a total of 14 million euros in the promotion of its repertoire, training and social support for its audiovisual authors.

Two outstanding examples of this investment effort are the recent premiere on TVE of the series Malacca, produced together with Globomedia and written by screenwriter Daniel Corpas at the SGAE Creation Laboratories, and Summer 1993, a script that Carla Simón developed in the same entity's workshop and whose film garnered critical recognition with its two awards at the 2017 Berlinale (Best First Film and Grand Prize of the International Jury of Generation KPlus -ex aequo with Becoming who I was-), the Goya for Best New Director 2018 and the Golden Biznaga at the XX Malaga Festival.
