9 out of 10 pay television subscribers have it contracted in packaged offers. The two main television groups, Mediaset and Atresmedia, represented 85% of television advertising revenues.

According to the latest report of the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), la free-to-air television billing reached the 422.7 million euros, 1% less compared to 2018. On the contrary, pay television obtained 563.6 million euros in revenue, with an increase of 2.6%.

Specifically, the income from the pay per I televisionP (pay television provided by operators through the xDSL/FTTH network), reached 402.7 million euros, which represents a growth of 16.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Among the other technologies used, both satellite TV and cable TV decreased by (-14%) and (-37%), respectively.

The number of pay television subscribers grew by 59,000 in this quarter, bringing the total to almost 6.8 million, with IP TV being the most subscribed, with 4.6 million subscribers.

91.9% of pay television subscribers had the service contracted under some packaged modality that includes other telecommunications services.

Thus, subscriber growth is partly related to these packaged offers, as well as promotions that allow you to subscribe for free during the first months.

The two main television groups, Mediaset and Atresmedia represented 85% of television advertising revenues.

Billing for income of this type decreased compared to the previous quarter due to the seasonal effect, after the Christmas advertising campaigns in the fourth quarter.

Advertising revenues (which include conventional advertising, sponsorships, telesales, telepromotion and product placements) totaled 524.5 million euros this quarter, of which 433.7 million corresponded to television and the rest to radio services.

Consumption

Regarding average television consumption during this quarter, it was 3 hours and 43 minutes per person per day. This data reflects a decrease of 17 minutes for the same period in 2018 and an increase of 4 minutes compared to the previous quarter.

By platform, television consumption, both open and pay, was distributed 75.8% for DTT, 2.4% for satellite television and 21.8% for cable TV and IP TV platforms.

DTT and satellite TV continue to lose audience in favor of the consumption of cable TV and IP TV services, which continue to grow due to the increase in pay television subscriptions in Spain.

By groups, Mediaset and Atresmedia were leaders, obtaining 27.9 and 27.7 points of quarterly audience share, respectively.

Taking into account the screen share, the most watched channels during the quarter were the generalists Telecinco (14.4%), Antena 3 (13%) and La 1 (9.5%).
