4K-HDR Summit 2019

Juan Pachon, Technical Sales Manager en Rohde&Schwarz; e Inés Sanz, Customer Engineering Manager en Hispasat have participated in a panel at the 4K-HDR Summit which closes this Friday in Malaga.

Sanz, who focused his speech on how the Satellite is emerging as a perfect fit for the new 5G networks, began his speech by reviewing the history of mobile telephony which has evolved very quickly from 1G back in the 80s to today with 5G. In the 1990s, 2G was introduced, which provided encryption, and some limited data services (such as text messaging). In 2000, GSM/3G would be standardized, allowing Internet connection, sharing of photos, videos... A decade later, in 2010, 4G provided a more refined broadband, with secure web access and video transmission. Now, 5G offers great speed, an improved user experience, better spectral efficiency and greatly reduced latency.

Inés Sanz has stressed that these new 5G services are being deployed in large cities, something that could increase the digital divide between the city and the rural world. "Deployments of terrestrial infrastructure will be increasingly less economically viable. Digital transformation and industry 4.0 require quality connectivity in 100% of the territory, including rural areas," he noted.

"It is necessary to ensure that rural areas have advanced communications systems. The satellite is capable of providing quality connectivity to 100% of citizens and coverage," he added.

5G provides 100 Mb/s connections and the possibility of distributing video content efficiently, while ensuring reliable and secure communications... But, as Sanz recalled, satellite also offers all this.

"5G requires the inclusion of satellite to reach everyone anywhere. The satellite will provide 5G with more capacity, and lower deployment costs. The capacity of the new HTS and VHTS satellites is 20-200 times higher than that offered by traditional satellites, allowing high-capacity satellite services at a lower cost. The satellites are specially adapted to offer broadcast, multicast and edge computing”, he pointed out.

On the other hand, he has stated that the new DTH platforms have evolved and now allow you to enjoy personalized television services such as video on demand (Push VOD) and IP multicast streaming channels. In his opinion, Push VoD via satellite allows a video-on-demand experience taking advantage of the satellite's broadcast capacity.

Broadcast y 5G

For his part, Juan Pachón has analyzed the potential of 5G for broadcast. The new networks will provide national coverage, ultra-low latency, more spectrum efficiency and cost savings… thus opening new business opportunities.

“Massive live streaming of content, new services in the public sector, the connected car and the Internet of Things, will be the revolutions that 5G will bring us,” he stated.

Pachón also recalled that 5G for content distribution and high data transfers is a agnostic technology so it can be applied to both 4K, 8K... at very low latency, thus increasing the customer experience.

Por último, ha destacado que Rohde&Schwarz participa en el 5G Today project together with companies such as Telefónica, BR, IRT, Kathrein in order to develop a laboratory that allows studying the possibilities of 5G applied to broadcast environments. At this time, trials promoted by this consortium have already been carried out in Germany, Asia, Italy and China.
