Spanish Screenings - XXL - Cines Doré 2022 Presentation

The Ministry of Culture and Sports via ICAA, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation via ICEX and the Malaga festivals y San Sebastian with their respective town councils they give life to “Spanish Screenings XXL”, an initiative defined as “an international market for Spanish audiovisual production”.

The project is framed in the Plan 'Spain, Audiovisual Hub of Europe', presented in March 2021 as one of the axes of the agenda Digital Spain 2025 and whose objective is to promote the audiovisual production, attracting investment and economic activity, as well as strengthening companies and professionals in the audiovisual industry, improving their competitiveness. Likewise, it is included in Component 25, ‘Spain Audiovisual Hub’, integrated into the policy to promote the culture and sports industry of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, specifically in the internationalization program of the Spanish audiovisual sector.

At the presentation ceremony of the initiative, which took place at the Cine Doré, screening venue Spanish Film Archive, the first vice president of the Government and minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation participated, Nadia Calvino; and the Minister of Culture and Sports, Michael iceta. It has also included a round table, led by the general director of the ICAA, Beatriz Navas, and in which the mayors of Málaga and San Sebastián have participated, Francisco de la Torre y My Highness, as well as the CEO of ICEX (an organization attached to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism), María Peña; the director of the Malaga Festival, Juan Antonio Vigar; and the director of the San Sebastián Festival, José Luis Rebordinos.

From March 21 to 24, the market will be held Spanish Screenings Content inside the Malaga Festival, as it is known today. It will expand its scope to subsections such as Talent, Adaptations, Remakes, Coproduction Forum and a Hub of new audiovisual content for emerging platforms (from podcasts, to Twitch, TikTok and alternative and disruptive formats). This initiative will also host Spain Colorful Diversity, an initiative for the autonomous communities, through their film offices and film commissions, to present their locations and support plans for filming.

Secondly, the San Sebastian Festival will include, from September 17 to 25, conferences to attract powerful international investors and talent representatives called Spanish Screenings Diversity. New technologies applied to audiovisuals and R&D&i will also be promoted and valued through Spanish Screenings Technology. Se trata de una continuación ampliada de la iniciativa Zinemaldia & Technology, que arrancó en 2018 como una apuesta del festival para posicionarse como referente para estrechar lazos entre tecnología y audiovisual, así como dar a conocer los nuevos avances tecnológicos y las oportunidades que generan para la creación y el negocio.

Con el objetivo de reforzar la marca Spanish Screenings internacionalmente, se llevarán a cabo “Spanish Screenings” On Tour, traveling actions aimed at the sale and promotion of Spanish audiovisuals in strategic territories, such as Eastern Europe and Asia. In addition, it will promote the respective festivals, the cities where they are celebrated and our cultural industry in general. Finally, it will be promoted to establish an active market throughout the year through a virtual promotion and business platform called Spanish Screenings 360.

Financing of Spanish Screenings XXL

The Spanish Screenings project will have 4.2 million allocated to events in 2022 and 2023, which will be articulated through nominative subsidies to the Malaga Festival and to San Sebastian Festival. In addition, they will be allocated more than 3 million euros to the development of the platform Spanish Screenings 360.

In parallel, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, through the ICAA, will develop new lines of support for the sector aimed at encouraging the purchase and international distribution of Spanish productions. For this there is a specific allocation of six million euros.

This budget comes from the endowment of 200 million euros than component 25 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan to reinforce Spain's role as Europe's audiovisual hub. Of these, 20 million come from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, through the ICAA, and 25 million from the budget of the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation.
