Carlos Saura - RNE - Sant Jordi Awards

The 66th edition of the RNE Sant Jordi Cinematography Awards They will recognize Carlos Saura's career on April 26.

RNE through its delegation in Barcelona, ​​has awarded the Sant Jordi Cinematography Awards since 1957. This year, the great honoree is the filmmaker Carlos Saura, who will receive the recognition on April 26 at a gala at the Teatre Lliure de Montjuïc, Barcelona.

Born in Huesca in 1932, Saura became interested in photography from a young age and abandoned his studies in industrial engineering to move to Madrid to study film direction. After directing a couple of short films, he became known in 1965 with The hunt, a film in which he treats the wounds caused by the civil war with great scenery, which earned him the award for best director at the Berlin Festival.

With this film he began his collaboration with the producer Elías Querejeta, and with it a talented and successful era, with films as decisive for the history of Spanish cinema as Peppermint struck, Raise crows o The First Angelica, which won the special prize from the jury of the Cannes Film Festival and marked its international consolidation. With the help of the dancer and choreographer Antonio Gades, he performed the successful musicals Blood Wedding, Carmen y witchy love, a genre to which he contributed his characteristic stamp and with which he also triumphed internationally. The musical is a genre that has never abandoned. In 2021 he led him to direct The king of the whole world, a tribute to Mexican folklore.

Carlos Saura's films have received numerous awards, among which stands out the Berlin Golden Bear to Hurry, hurry, in 1981; 13 Goya Awards to Oh, Carmela, in 1991, and the Sant Jordi Awards to The hunt (1967) y The First Angelica (1975). Once again, the Sant Jordi Awards grant him a distinction, in this case for a career as brilliant as it is long-standing.

Carlos Saura, who celebrated his 90th birthday in January, has also been awarded the honorary Golden Shell of the San Sebastian Festival; the Spike of honor from the Seminci and various jury awards at the Cannes Film Festival, where he is the director who has competed the most times. Recently, he received the Biznaga of honor from the Malaga Festival.
