Jose Luis Garci

El director, productor, guionista y crítico literario José Luis Garci ha sido reconocido por su trayectoria en la 67ª edición de los Premios RNE Sant Jordi de Cinematografía.

Garci presentó durante diez años el programa de divulgación ¡Qué grande es el cine! en La 2 y fue el primer director español en obtener un Oscar en 1983 para Volver a empezar. El galardón es un homenaje a su figura como cineasta y divulgador.

Born in Madrid in 1944, José Luis Garci discovered cinema as a child and felt fascinated. His first jobs in the world of cinema were as a screenwriter, collaborating with Antonio Mercero and José Luis Dibildos, among others. The stage as director he started in 1975 and soon achieved success: it was in 1977 with Pending subject, written with José María González-Sinde. The following year it premiered Alone in the morning and completed the trilogy with The green meadows.

They are passion for crime novel led him to direct El crack in 1981. The following year he directed Volver a empezar, a reflection on exile that, despite not succeeding in theaters, awarded the Oscar for best non-English language film 40 years ago. It is not the only time that Garci has been nominated for this award, the stories afternoon session (1984), Approved subject (1987) y The grandfather (1988) also competed for the Hollywood award.

Garci's films have also been recognized with the Goya award for best director for Approved subject (1988) and has to his credit the National Cinematography Award (1992) and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1997).

In his career, the part of cinematographic dissemination stands out, known above all for the program How great is cinema!, que presentó en La 2 entre 1995 y 2005. El espacio, muy seguido y valorado, enseñó al gran público a querer al cine clásico con la emisión y análisis de las mejores obras cinematográficas.

Miembro de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando y la Academia de les Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de Hollywood, los Premios Sant Jordi han querido destacar a José Luis Garci por su trayectoria como cineasta y divulgador del séptimo arte.
