This distinction is awarded to personalities in acting, directing, production, production, technique and cinematographic script, whose professional career has enriched the film heritage, a circumstance that the Governing Council of the academic institution considers to occur in a “very notable” way in the figure of José Luis Borau, who was awarded the National Cinematography Award in 2002.

The skilled director began working as a film critic at the Heraldo de Aragón and later studied at the Official School of Cinematography in Madrid. In 1967 he founded his own production company, El Imán, with which for the first ten years he made advertisements and produced films by other directors.

His first self-produced film was the political thriller We have to kill B., in 1974. The following year, he achieved his greatest commercial success with the drama Stealths, with which he won the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival and the Award for Best Film in the Spanish Language.

In 1997 he was nominated to win the Goya for 'Best Screenplay' for nobody child and in 2001 he won an Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the 'Best Direction' section with his film Leo.
