'La Memoria Infinita', by Maite Alberdi, Goya 2024 for Best Ibero-American Film

Maite Alberdi has seen 'Infinite Memory', her emotional documentary about the more than 25-year relationship between Paulina Urrutia, actress and former Chilean Minister of Culture, and her husband Augusto Góngora, a cultural journalist for Chilean television who eight years ago was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, recognized with the Goya 2024 for Best Ibero-American Film.

Released in January 2023 in the Sundance Dinner Festival, where he won the Grand Jury Prize, The infinite memory of Fable y Micromundo Productions has received praise from the public and critics, surpassing global phenomena such as Barbie, Oppenheimer o Grand Tourism. In his career in competitions he has accumulated recognitions such as second place in the Audience Award (Panorama) of the Berlinale, the Bronze Horse for best film in the Stockholm International Film Festival, the Best Latin American Feature Film at the Forqué Awards or second place in the Best Documentary Film of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

On the horizon is his nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film in the Oscars 2024, a milestone for Chilean cinematography and Alberdi's second experience after falling just short of winning the award in 2020 with The mole agent. "When a film has a journey with so many recognitions, you see it in a different way, because you realize that my intuitions are also those of the audience. This makes me feel that the best radar is one, and from there you have to make decisions. It is a very incredible feeling to listen to yourself," reflects the film itself Alberdi about the way you see The infinite memory after global recognition.

On the tape, photographed by Pablo Valdes, takes great importance spontaneous images captured by Paulina herself, given that it was filmed in a pandemic context. The result is a production that about a unprecedented way to feelings of the protagonists, creating one of the most emotional love stories of recent years: "We were hit by the pandemic and I had to hand the camera to Paulina, which ended up creating a film that I didn't expect. There was a lot of material, because it was my camera, hers and his, and the beauty of the montage was seeing how so many different textures and so many shapes coexisted. In the end, what brought everything together was emotion."
