Ultra HD Forum - NAB 2024 - Las Vegas - UHD Sustainability

NAB 2024 will host a series of demos and discussions on workflows that can help reduce energy requirements and improve the technical efficiency of the UHD world with the help of the Ultra HD Forum.

Founded in 2015, the Ultra HD Forum was presented to the broadcast world to accelerate the adoption of UHD by establishing “best practices for the future of television.” With the help of some of its members, Ateme, Brightcove, CTOiC, Fairmile West, InterDigital, LG Electronics, Advanced HDR by Technicolor y Ross Video, the organization has decided to focus on sustainability ahead of NAB 2024.

As explained Ian Nock, Chairman of the Ultra HD Forum working group responsible for the upcoming NAB: "Sustainability has emerged as a key area of focus for Ultra HD Forum members and the industry at large in recent years. But even we have been surprised by the innovation and sophistication demonstrated by the sustainable solutions showcased at this year's NAB conference. Our mission is to ensure that the use of sustainable Ultra HD technologies is deployed while continuing to improve the delivery of effective quality video services."

In total, the Ultra HD Forum stand will host seven technology demos designed to improve sustainability without compromising quality. These are the production workflow hiperconvergente HDR Single Master, which updates the demo offered at the last edition of IBC; improved media streaming by strategically inserting metadata and inserting tailored luminance settings to reduce power consumption; new generation codecs (HEVC and VVC) and the need for hardware decoding, or the pixel value reduction in HDR content relying on AI.

These themes are complemented with reflections such as the influence of viewing conditions in the energy consumption of the screens; he energy consumption impact when displays convert SDR content to HDR, and demonstrating a workflow to Capture energy measurements from mass audiences.
