INFiLED reveals the secrets of the virtual production of 'Poor Things' at NAB 2024
'Poor Things', the Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-winning film for best production design, starring Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe, came to life thanks to a gigantic virtual production system powered by INFiLED y Pixera.
In this edition of NAB 2024, the film has had a special role Poor Th¡ngs since Infiled invited some of the professionals who participated in this project to share the secrets of production with ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects). The CEO/COO of ICT AG participated in the meeting, Erik Wolff; the virtual production supervisor at Halostage, Adrian Weber; and INFiLED Chief Technology Officer Tony Vanmoorleghem.
The key to production was to employ no less than 2,400 individual INFiLED LED cabinets, with content rendered by four custom-built Pixera One media servers.
Under the supervision of Adrian Weber, the huge virtual production stage had more than 600 square meters of LED wall INFiLED YOU of 2.6 mm, along with more than 1,500 amplifiers (with a peak power of 360 kW) and 5.5 km of cabling. The full resolution of LED wall was from 23K (23,040px × 3840px), which meant that the background content had to be rendered in four sections, one for each Pixera One server.
The virtual production stage of Poor Things was built by ICT AG y Halostage at the Origo studios in Budapest (Hungary). This gigantic assembly, of more than 21 tons of weight, was built around the physical set representing the steamship on which Bella embarks on her voyage of discovery from Lisbon in the company of lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo).
The background was made up of multiple pre-rendered, computer-generated video layers composed of Union VFX, played from multiple Pixera media servers in perfect sync, while the rest of the film was shot on traditional sets, Weber confirms.
