Coachella Festival 2024: streaming of their concerts with a Blackmagic workflow

Chicago-based production company Media Stream Wave used more than 40 URSA Broadcast G2 cameras and 14 Atem Constellation 8K switchers from Blackmagic to broadcast online and execute the internal production of the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, whose production was in charge of Springboard Productions.

Although the work dynamics for each scenario varied depending on their size and location, Media Stream Wave used various configurations with fiber optic connections at both festivals, always starring the cameras URSA Broadcast G2 equipped with devices Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter, Blackmagic Studio Fiber Converter and SMPTE cables (which allow long distances to be covered) that made it possible to transmit audiovisual signals, power the equipment, activate the pilot lights and communicate with other members of the team. The cameras were connected to the mixers ATEM Constellation 8K, while the units ATEM Camera Control Panel were used to adjust the hue. Likewise, the producer used two ATEM 4 M/E Advanced Panel, six ATEM 2 M/E Advanced Panel and a ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel to control all mixers.

Azuolas Sinkevicius, director of Media Stream Wave, speaks openly about the result “more cinematic” demanded by their clients, which is why they explored the use of Blackmagic for these events. Beyond highlighting the solidity and the low latency of the Australian company's solutions, Sinkevicius has also highlighted the extreme situations that they had to overcome: "It's amazing to be able to use Blackmagic Design equipment on critical projects like these festivals, where they endure 38-degree temperatures and are in the sun for 10 hours, and have yet to have any issues. Coachella is like the Super Bowl of music, with so much going on at once, and it's an incredible feat to provide equipment that works so well to support these festival productions."

Sinkevicius turned to 96 HyperDeck units en los diversos escenarios a fin de grabar todos los cortes, las señales aisladas y las verificaciones antes de emitir al aire. A su vez, se utilizaron diez dispositivos H.264 Pro Recorder para las versiones destinadas específicamente a los artistas y la gerencia. En la sala de control de una de las dos unidades móviles de Media Stream Wave, Sinkevicius empleó tarjetas de captura y reproducción DeckLink 8K Pro con el propósito de insertar anuncios y gráficos activados desde los equipos HyperDeck, transmitiendo el fondo y la imagen principal a los mezcladores ATEM Constellation 8K.

Media Stream Wave también utilizó 32 monitores SmartView 4K para diversas aplicaciones en las unidades móviles y ocho dispositivos Blackmagic Video Assist 7″ 12G HDR como monitores utilitarios en los recintos. Por otro lado, se emplearon nueve matrices Smart Videohub 40×40 en la distribución de señales a varios destinos. Estas se controlaron mediante 64 equipos Videohub Smart Control Pro.

Asimismo, se utilizaron 32 dispositivos Blackmagic Audio Monitor 12G para supervisar el audio, y 56 procesadores Teranex OFF a fin de llevar a cabo distintas sincronizaciones. A la hora de amplificar la distribución de señales, se recurrió a 40 Teranex Mini SDI Distribution 12G, así como a 450 unidades Mini Converters Optical Fiber 12G-SDI para transmitir las imágenes entre los escenarios y las unidades móviles a través de fibra óptica.

Echando la vista atrás, Sinkevicius celebra el notable rendimiento de las soluciones de Blackmagic en contextos tan desafiantes como la de los festivales Coachella y Stagecoach: “Los equipos de Blackmagic Design no solo sobrevivieron al calor intenso del desierto, con polvo por todas partes durante varios días en estos festivales, sino que, además, las cámaras también nos brindaron imágenes hermosas de una calidad increíble.
