Media Capital will launch a new general channel at the end of the year

The TVI Ficção channel will be replaced at the end of 2024, as a result of the push for non-linear consumption of series and movies, by a new generalist channel directed by Hugo Andrade, currently deputy general director of TVI (Media Capital).

Media Capital, owner of both TVI as of CNN en Portugal, has already presented the license for the new channel to the Regulatory Entity for Social Communication, Portuguese responsible for the registration and management of broadcasting. The new channel, as confirmed by the director of CNN Portugal Nuno Santos Public, will combine in its grill entertainment and information and will seek to compete with CMTV, channel operated by Medialivre leader in the segment.

Hugo Andrade, deputy general director of TVI and previously program director of RTP1 and RTP Memoria, will be in charge of direct this channel, the third that Media Capital has promoted in the last three years. The channel will seek to overcome the share of 1.3% which currently owns TVI Ficção; a notable amount based on other direct competitors such as SIC Mulher, but limited by its nature as a thematic channel.

Once the move is completed, Media Capital will have a total of four channels: TVI, a generalist channel broadcast free-to-air, and three cable channels: CNN (news), TVI Reality (entertainment) and the new channel, also with generalist ambitions.
