Pepe Carbajo

The academic and former vice president of the Television Academy Pepe Carbajo died in the early hours of April 11 after a long fight against the disease at the age of 80.

Historic TVE producer stood out for his work at the head of the Barcelona Olympic Games 92. Was member of the Board of Directors of the Television Academy from 2006 to 2018 and a key figure in the refoundation of the Institution with Manuel Campo Vidal's team. Was executive producer of the presidential debates organized by the Academy in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016. In addition, he started and promoted the Treasures of the Academy project, a documentary archive that reconstructs the history of television in Spain told by its protagonists. He also launched the Concha García Campoy Scientific Journalism Awards in honor of the remembered journalist.

In 2104 the Board of Directors of the Academy decided unanimously to grant him the Special Talent Award for his professional career, for his contribution as a producer to the history of the Presidential Debates in Spain and for his decisive contribution to the refoundation of the Institution.

The Television Academy wanted to join "the pain and sadness over the loss of a great and endearing professional who was very loved and recognized among his colleagues, a key figure in the history of the Television Academy in Spain. On behalf of the academics, we want to send our deepest affection and support to his family and friends."

A lifetime dedicated to television

Graduate in Information Sciences and Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid. He was also a broadcast production technician and historic executive producer of TVE. From September 2006 until 2018 he was a member and vice president of the Board of Directors of the Television Academy.

From 1971 to 2003 he worked at TVE as a producer, production director, sports director, head of broadcasting, and team leader at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics and the Los Angeles and Seoul Olympic Games. He served as logistics director at the Barcelona 92 ​​Olympics.

He has been coordinator of the OTI in Atlanta, Executive Producer during the year 2000 of the documentaries The century that left us, 25 years of the Monarchy and Juan Antonio Samaranch, Olympian and genius. He has produced the spaces The Tree of Science and School of Sports.

In addition, he was executive producer and director of the venue for the Pan American Games held in Brazil in 2007.

He has been executive producer of the Electoral Debates held by the Television Academy in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

In the world of cinema he produced the feature films Pata Negra, Cuarteto de la Habana and Siempre Habana. He was also co-producer with Italy of the feature film The Boy from Copacabana. He also directed the film Clara is not a woman's name.

In 2000 he received the Iris Award for Best Executive Producer from the Television Academy and in 2014 the Special Talent Award in recognition of his career.
