The BBC and Sony join forces to detect 'fake' content
BBC Research & Development y Sony They are collaborating to raise awareness of the risks of synthetic content and establish C2PA-compliant standards for digital provenance to ensure the reliability of news-related content.
This is part of a broader initiative in which the main actors in the sector participate, under the committee of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). The goal is to establish robust workflows for image and video provenance and digital signatures to ensure the authenticity of digital content.
In an era in which our digital lives are inundated with content from numerous sources, distinguishing between reality and fiction has become an increasingly difficult challenge. The rise of synthetic content, including manipulated images and videos generated by artificial intelligence, poses significant risks to the credibility of news and information. To combat this, C2PA members are leveraging their expertise and resources to develop and promote technologies that help verify the authenticity of digital content.
Application of C2PA rules
Cabe destacar que la PXW-Z300 Sony, launched in July 2025, now incorporates digital signatures in video files, supporting the C2PA standard for content authentication and responding to the growing need for verifiable content.
Junto con los demás miembros del comité C2PA, BBC R&D y Sony se han comprometido a educate the public about the risks of synthetic content and the importance of verifying digital provenance. Through information campaigns and collaborations with other media organizations, its goal is to empower users to critically evaluate the content they find on the Internet.
Testing and demonstration
The BBC and Sony have collaborated to create a video showing how users can verify the authenticity of video content using C2PA-enabled devices. By checking content credentials, users can see if a video was captured by a real camera, who posted it, and if it has been manipulated.
This collaboration is one of the world's first use cases testing the C2PA workflow with video content, and is part of the IBC Accelerator.
"Our digital lives are filled with content from a multitude of sources, and we are often expected to understand the difference between fact and fiction. This collaboration with Sony and other industry leaders is essential in helping us develop tools that ensure the authenticity of digital content," he said. Jatin Aythora, director de BBC R&D.
"Sony is committed to promoting technologies that improve the reliability of digital content. By working with the BBC and other C2PA members, we aim to provide users with the tools they need to verify the authenticity of the content they consume," he highlighted. Olivier Bovis, Director of Multimedia Solutions at Sony Europe.
The end-to-end authenticity workflow will be showcased at IBC 2025 as part of the IBC Accelerator program in Hall 14.
