Emergent Cine Lab call

On November 4 and 5, the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid hosts the ninth edition of the Project Development Laboratory and Short Film Co-production Forum emergent! Cinema Lab, an event organized by the AIC (Short Film Industry Association) with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Madrid City Council, EGEDA and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).

Throughout its nine editions, emergent! Cinema Lab has been established as annual meeting point between the industry with new producers and creators. The event confirms its national and international position and promotes the emerging audiovisual talent in Spanish from all over the world, in order to give international boost to the short film industry.

Furthermore, it is the ““only laboratory in the world” specialized in the development of short films for new creators (first or second work) in Spanish, as well as international short film co-production forum for Europe and Latin America. It is a commitment to promote Spain, as a key space where locate, facilitate and promote the professional growth of the best audiovisual talent emerging in Spanish from around the world.

The first day of these two professional days, Tuesday November 4 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., will be marked by the presentation in pitch format of the 10 new projects, selected from more than 200 short film projects registered. The second day, the Wednesday, November 5, will be celebrated two round tables. The first, of 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., will revolve around “Case study on international co-production of short films”. The first half hour the short films will be shown Although it's night, directed by Guillermo Galoe, premiered at the Cannes Festival and won the Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film and Songs the Wood Signs, pending release. The producers will participate in the subsequent talk Amélie Quéret and David Casas. It will be moderated by José Esteban Alenda, producer at Solita Films.

It will follow, 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the round table “New forms of distribution and promotion of short films”, in which they will participate Alessandro Loprieno, CEO of Weshort; Matteo Pianezzi, director of Figari International Short Film Fest; y Ana Oliveira, responsible for alliances and sponsorships at the International Festival of Curtas Vila do Conde. It will be moderated by Eva Fernandez, producer at Crete Productions.

They have been selected from more than 200 registered from 12 Spanish-speaking countries. Of them, 134 came from Spain and 70 from Latin American countries: Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Brazil and Bolivia.

Los 10 selected projects come from 3 nationalities: 8 from Spain, 1 from Colombia and 1 from Uruguay. Of them, 5 are fiction, 1 animation and 4 documentaries. Furthermore, this edition stands out because more than half of the projects are directed and produced by women.

This selection has very broad and varied themes that range from a lost generation trapped in the internet to different ways of understanding motherhood, including how to face grief or racial prejudice, among others.

These 10 short films are: Hunter (Spain), directed by Luís Garau and produced by Japonica Films, the portrait of a generation lost and trapped on the internet; Hereafter (Spain), directed by Alicia Torrent and produced by La Costa Produce and Tralla Studio, a journey of a mother and a daughter that will change their bond and their way of understanding motherhood; The Balance (Spain), directed by Joel Munu and produced by Jaibo Films, the story of parents grieving the death of their son and a young man who moves into their house; Como Sylvia Plath (Uruguay), directed by Gabriela Sellanes Fagini and produced by Alfonso Trelles and Josemari Martínez (Guazuvrá Cine), a hallucinogenic trip of four friends and a reality that imposes itself on them; Higinia and Manuela (Spain), directed by Maria Cereceda and produced by SMC productions and Zona Cielo Films; two neighbors who hate each other are forced to meet again due to a town tradition; The paths of desire (Spain), directed by Roco Gómez Magaña and produced by Perranube Studio and Arriate Studio, an analysis of how desire guides our actions, fears and dreams; Tea cockatoos (Spain), directed by Huichi Chiu, Miriam Ouchi and Jenifer de la Rosa and produced by Mayéutica Producciones, an exploration of intergenerational dynamics and racial prejudices through humor and magical elements; grass bed (Spain), selected from ECAM Forum in Madrid, directed by Carmela Román and produced by Rami García (Mála Pécora), a reconstruction of a lost relationship through performance and the archive; Ceiba (Colombia), selected from Mercado del Bogotá Short Film Festival / Festival de Cortos de Bogotá – BOGOSHORTS (Bogotá, Colombia), directed by Nicole Manuela Prieto Sotomonte and produced by IX FIERAS and Santiago Forero, takes us to an old and abandoned house, a tree that connects the earth with the sky and an endless jungle, and Tina (Spain), selected by Curt Creixent of the Institut Valencià de Cultura, directed by Eliana Fernandez and produced by the UPV Animation Master, asks us a question “What happens if the dog you adopted to feel better is worse than you?”

He selection committee It was made up of five Latin American audiovisual professionals: Virginia Hinze, Uruguayan producer; Jose Luis Aparicio, Cuban filmmaker; Ana Camacho, Spanish producer; Marta Matute, Spanish actress and director, and Antonella Sudasassi Furniss, Costa Rican director, screenwriter and producer.

The 10 participating projects will opt for seven prizes valued at €8,500: First Prize for Emerging Madrid Talent! of €2,500, awarded to the first participating project and whose prize should be invested in the development or production of the project; Second Prize for Emerging Madrid Talent! of €1,000, awarded to the second best participating project and whose prize must be invested in the development or production of the project; Emerging Weshort Award! valued at €5,000, awarded to the best participating project consisting of the purchase of exclusive broadcast rights for the film on this streaming platform; Emerging Connection Award! Spain which allows the winning project to go as selected to the LANZA independent film market of Abycine; Emerging Connection Award! Latin which allows the winning project to be selected in the BFM Latin American development and co-production forum of Bogoshorts (Colombia); Emerging Connection Award! Europe which allows the winning project to be selected in the Short Film Market of the Figari International Short Film Festival (Italy), and ECAM Impulse Award which offers the winning project specialized advice from ECAM Forum.
