SMPTE sheds light on the technological intersections of AI and media
The latest technical report of the SMPTE in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) analyzes in depth artificial intelligence (AI) and its effect on the media.
He report has been developed in order to provide media professionals with basic information about AI and the machine learning (ML). Start with a technical explanation of both technologies, followed by the effects that they will probably have in the media landscape. The report then goes on to examine the AI ethics and ends by analyzing the role that can be played by standards in the future of AI/ML.
The document is the result of the work of a AI standards working group in the media that began in 2020 and is an updated version of the technical report published in 2023. As explained Thomas Bause Mason, SMPTE Standards Director, “the media AI landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and the SMPTE AI Working Group remains committed to keeping pace with this transformation.” That is why it was essential to review the technical report, reviewing progress such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhanced security considerations, he open source in AI y emerging milestones such as ISO/IEC 42001, among others. “By incorporating these updates, our goal is to provide the industry with clear guidance on AI/ML, as well as interoperable AI practices for media workflows,” he notes.
