Web attacks against the media and technology sector have doubled over the last 18 months.

Media cyber attack (Akamai)

A study of Akamai indicates that web attacks against the media and technology sector have doubled over the 18 months. These sectors are also the Target 35% of Credential Stuffing Attacks.

Between January 2018 and June 2019, Akamai recorded more than 61 billion credential stuffing attempts and more than 4 billion attacks targeting web applications. In this special edition of the State of the Internet Security Report, we focus on data from security sectors. high technology, audiovisual media and entertainment, collectively called “media and technology.”

These three sectors accounted for nearly 35% of all credential stuffing attacks and nearly 17% of web application attacks detected by Akamai during the 18-month reporting period.

The analysis indicates that these three markets are a target of constant and continuous attack by two
reasons: personal and corporate data. The companies they target are well-known brands, so criminals seek to take advantage of that notoriety.

Credential stuffing exploits targeted brands and their customers and allows criminals to access personal information and corporate assets, such as multimedia content or digital products.

The high-tech sector, which includes equipment and software manufacturing, as well as technology and service providers (such as cloud, mobile, telecommunications and cable operators), suffered the majority of attacks detected in media and technology.

In contrast, attacks against the entertainment sector, which includes content providers, television networks, and post-production, content development, research and analysis organizations, remained constant, with a major peak on September 22, 2018. The audiovisual media sector, which includes distribution and the film industry, also had a steady stream of attacks, which increased over time and reached peaks during the second quarter of 2019.

This constant volume shows that media and technology are an attractive target for the economy
criminal.
