Cinema attendance falls by more than 8% in 2025, although Spanish cinema maintains its market share
According to the consultant Comscore, attendance at movie theaters in Spain fell by more than 8% in 2025, with a total of 65 million spectators and a collection of 453 million euros. Despite this general decline, Spanish cinema manages to maintain its market share at 19%.
In 2024, the box office had reached 489 million euros and 73 million viewers. If the figures are compared with those of 2019, before the pandemic, the accumulated drop exceeds 38%, since that year the historical record of 105.93 million viewers was registered. After the recovery experienced in 2022 and 2023, the market again showed signs of weakness in 2024, with a 6% drop in viewers, a trend that has accentuated in 2025.
In 2025, according to Comscore, the evolution of the box office has been irregular throughout the year. The first semester closed with a growth of 3% compared to 2024, although this figure is relativized by the impact of the strike of Hollywood actors and screenwriters in the first half of the previous year, which caused the postponement of numerous premieres. The second half of 2025 will close, provisionally, with a 16% decrease, especially weighed down by the poor results of October (-28%) and November (-31%), months that traditionally have a relevant weight in the overall annual box office.
The best premiere of the year was Avatar: Fire and Ash, which hit theaters on December 19 and grossed 6.2 million euros in its first weekend. The second week of the film's showing boosted the best weekend of the year, with a total collection of 9.9 million euros. The highest grossing film of 2025 was Lilo y Stitch (Walt Disney), with 24.7 million euros and 3.82 million viewers. They followed him Jurassic World: Rebirth (Universal), with 18.8 million and 2.6 million viewers, and Avatar: Fire and Ash (Walt Disney), with 16.58 million and 1.94 million viewers.
By provinces, Madrid led attendance at venues with a share of 21.5%, followed by Barcelona (13.7%), Valencia (6.5%), Alicante (4.1%), Seville (3.7%), Málaga (3.7%), Murcia (3.5%), Vizcaya (2.5%), Balearic Islands (2.5%) and Cádiz (2.3%).
Spanish cinema
As for Spanish cinema, in 2025 it maintained its market share at 19% thanks mainly to the success of Father there is only one 5, directed by Santiago Segura, the only national title present in the annual top 10. As a whole, Spanish productions added 12 million viewers and one collection of 78 million of euros.
Segura's film is followed by the following as the highest grossers: The captive by Alejandro Amenábar (Walt Disney, 5.2 million euros and 792,082 spectators); Sundays by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Bteam Pictures, 3.92 million euros, 625,394 viewers), Wolfgang by Javier Ruiz Caldera (Universal, 3.9 million euros and 597,593 viewers, and Dinner by Manuel Gómez Pereira (A Contracorriente, 3.7 million euros and 606,141 viewers).
