Paul Gagnon, research director at NPD DisplaySearch, said: "Consumers continue to be very cautious in their purchases, mainly in countries with high penetration rates of flat screens, so price differences can have a strong impact and LCD is expected to continue to reduce the price gap with respect to plasma. In addition, many brands are taking a more conservative approach, focusing at all costs on profits over volume, so the rate of price erosion is not expected to be as strong as it has been in years. previous ones, which could have some impact on demand.”

The LCD market is expected to account for more than 88.5 percent of global television sales in 2012, up from 82.5 percent in 2011. By contrast, plasma will account for just 5.3 percent of sales volume in 2012, after peaking at around 7.4 percent in 2010.

Within the flat screen market, larger sizes continue to increase their share, raising the average size of televisions sold to almost 35″ in 2012 from 30″ just four years ago. The increase in the number of manufacturers that produce LCD panels is also leading to a considerable drop in price.

As for 3D, although in the US its takeoff continues to be slow, in other emerging regions it is pushing strongly. In 2011, 24 million units were sold, with NPD DisplaySearch forecasting sales of 46 million units for this year. Penetration is expected to exceed 25 percent in both Western Europe and China, and 20 percent in Eastern Europe. While North America is expected to have 19 percent penetration in 2012, although according to this study it would be the leading region in 3D sales in 2014, when most large format displays incorporate 3D capability as a standard feature.
