Blackmagic - Microsculptures - Pyxis 6K - Salavat Fidai

The full frame sensor of the camera Blackmagic Pyxis 6K addresses one of its biggest challenges to date: capturing Salavat Fidai's microsculptures, hand-carved into pencil tips.

Although he is now widely recognized for his microsculptures in graphite, the artist and filmmaker Secret Fidai He did not begin his professional artistic career until well into adulthood. After dedicating more than 20 years to the corporate field, Fidai He left that world behind and began to experiment with different materials and artistic techniques. Finally, he decided on graphite microsculpture: the sculpture carving Highly detailed pencil tips. To date, he has created more than 700 tiny works throughout 10 years, which have been exhibited in countless exhibitions, galleries and museums around the world.

"At first, I took photos of the finished sculptures and shared them on social media, but my followers started asking me to show them the carving process. My videos quickly went viral, accumulating millions of views and die-hard followers, and also caught the attention of advertising agencies and major brands. That's how I went from being an amateur filmmaker to creating professional content and advertisements," Fidai himself explains.

Salavat Fidai's journey with Blackmagic

As Fidai continued to gain knowledge of capture, editing and grading, he realized that the recording media he was using was not allowing him to realize his creative vision. “A few years ago, I was lucky enough to participate in a documentary, and that was when I tried the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. I was very impressed with the cinematic quality of the image, the professional-grade flexibility, the very natural reproduction of skin tones, all at a very affordable price. I also loved the huge built-in screen and Blackmagic OS menu, it's very easy to use and very well designed. I think it was love at first sight,” Fidai recalls.

That's when he made the jump to the camera Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K: "I started using the full-frame format of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K; it's very important to me to have such a powerful and compact camera in my arsenal. I shot the main material using the eyepiece of my trinocular stereomicroscope with an adapter, so the weight and size of the camera were of great importance. And when I need to record something in extremely high quality, I turn to the full-frame sensor's full-aperture 6K recording capability."

Fidai explains that from the first moment he “loved” the “practically unlimited” color spectrum of the codec Blackmagic RAW, which helped him in his post-production processes: “I noticed that, if I shot the material with the Cinema Camera 6K and then downsampling to 4K, this significantly increased the level of detail and microcontrast, which is crucial when recording miniature works.”

The jump to the Pyxis 6K

After participating in several film projects, the idea of filming his own documentaries began to float around Fidai's head. "I started looking for an everyday camera that would be affordable for an independent filmmaker. Despite the obvious advantages of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, I needed a modular, compact-style camera," he says.

That's when the digital film camera Blackmagic Pyxis 6K made an appearance: "I was immediately fascinated by the cube shape of the Pyxis, which allows you to add accessories and other items for a wide variety of functions. I also loved using the viewfinder BEAR Who EVF, as it opens up new possibilities for shooting documentaries in bright sunlight and in dynamic handheld scenes. Now, I use my Pyxis 6K every day as my main camera to shoot commercials, documentary interviews and various creative experiments.”

From Blackmagic cameras to DaVinci Resolve

The cameras of Blackmagic Design and the format Blackmagic RAW led to Fidai to experiment with DaVinci Resolve Studio. "At first, I only used DaVinci Resolve as a 'processing room' for Blackmagic RAW file conversion and noise reduction, but I've now made significant progress towards color grading and audio processing. I'm just getting the hang of DaVinci Resolve Studio, but I already have a great appreciation for the audio editing tools, tracking, image stabilization, and the convenient video compression to any format feature, as well as my favorite node system."

Among Fidai's favorite features is the AI voice isolation: "I was filming an interview in a large room with high ceilings, and the lapel microphone recorded a lot of resonance or echo, while the outside boom microphone picked up a lot of street noise. It would have taken me hours to fix the sound using third-party plugins or specialized audio editors, but I remembered Resolve's AI tool for such purposes, and the result was a voice of perfect clarity, without background noise or echo."
