The animation work 'Ordures' takes shape from different locations with Blackmagic Cloud

DaVinci Resolve Studio y Blackmagic Cloud were deployed to optimize work dynamics and connect teams located in various regions of France during the production of 'Ordures', a format that unites volume animation and live action.

Directed by Foliascope and produced for ART in collaboration with Darjeeling, Inthebox y Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinema, is medium footage of 48 minutes about the environment tells the story of Gobi, a disposable cup in search of its owner. addressing issues such as waste and environmental sustainability in the process. Nicolas Flory, technical and artistic director of Foliascope, played the role of editing supervisor for the movie. By using DaVinci Resolve Studio y Blackmagic Cloud, Foliascope coordinated a filming unit in Paris (Darjeeling), a live-action and volume animation team in Valence, and a visual effects group in Annecy (Inthebox), in order to combine photorealistic images with the aforementioned animation technique.

Flory consider that Blackmagic Cloud was “very important” during production, especially to achieve the “remote collaboration between the director and Foliescope. "In addition, it gave us the opportunity to share each stage of the production with the director, cinematographer, colorist, visual effects and compositing team, as well as the production team. (...) The leaders of each team could see the progress on a daily basis, and this allowed us to collectively solve problems and make technical decisions regarding filming, animation and post-production."

Editing and grading with DaVinci Resolve

Collaboration in the cloud through DaVinci Resolve Studio contributed to the continuity of all aspects of production. First they filmed the action scenes, to later proceed to editing and make a prior grading in DaVinci Resolve Studio. "As the animation and editing took place in Foliascope, the director continued filming and editing in Paris. We constantly shared the timeline with the colorist remotely to grade the action images we used as a base, before importing them into Dragonframe for volume animation," Flory explained.

Foliascope turned to DaVinci Resolve Studio already ShotGrid for technical and creative supervision. In turn, the presentation function of Blackmagic Cloud was used to review images with clients, while Fusion Studio simplified viewing and cleaning up shots, removing supports and green backgrounds before final compositing.

For Flory, Blackmagic Cloud has been the key tool to achieve success Garbage by allowing “everything to be centralized in the cloud”, which allowed him to work “efficiently, respecting the budget and schedule.” “Without a resource like Blackmagic Cloud to bring everyone together, a project of this type with teams spread across multiple cities simply would not have been successful,” he concludes.
