Picnic releases all your creative potential with Quantum
In a sector where technical precision and creativity must coexist in constant balance, Picnic has managed to position itself as one of the most solid post-production studios in Spain in a surprisingly short time. With frenetic activity for national and international platforms, storage management was key so, after evaluating different options, the studio trusted in StorNext, the collaborative file system of Quantum.
Founded in 2020 as a result of the merger of three companies specialized in sound, image and visual effects, Picnic has been able to anticipate the needs of an industry in full transformation.
That context, along with the impact of productions such as The Money Heist, promoted the creation of a studio prepared to tackle larger scale and more complex projects. Picnic began with a modest infrastructure with two image rooms and two sound rooms, but designed from the beginning with a vision of growth. Five years later, the studio has more of 30 professionals working in different shifts and a dozens of operational suites connected to a shared storage system.
However, rapid growth brought with it technical challenges. The initial infrastructure soon began to show limitations, especially in performance and scalability. The lack of support from the previous system and the inability to extend licenses resulted in bottlenecks that directly affected the workflow.
“We started seeing colorists leave the room and ask others if they were doing heavy lifting because they couldn't reproduce the material on the system,” González recalls. An especially delicate situation when there are clients present and delivery times are critical.
Reliability, stability and experience
After evaluating different options (including high-capacity NAS systems and different network configurations), the studio opted for StorNext, Quantum's collaborative file system, in a project made up of Trigital. The choice was not accidental. Reliability, stability and previous experience with this technology were decisive. The implementation was completed in less than a week and with minimal disruption to activity, allowing for a smooth transition for the team.
Since then, the benefits have been evident. The system allows you to work simultaneously on multiple processes (grading, shaping, visual effects rendering) without compromising performance. Furthermore, it has significantly reduced operational incidentsyes and ha Improved experience for both technicians and customers.
Beyond performance, the new infrastructure has also provided advanced management tools. The possibility of foreseeing the use of medium-term storage allows more efficient planning and more strategic decision making.
With a solid technological foundation, Picnic is now looking to the future with a clear roadmap: expanding its capacity with nearline storage and long-term archiving solutions with LTO libraries. All of this with a well-defined objective: freeing the team from technical concerns to focus on what is truly important.
In a sector where speed and quality are non-negotiable, Picnic demonstrates that technological innovation is not only a support, but a key driver for creativity. “I think we should use technology in a way that gives us more time to make creative decisions and leave the technical aspect aside a little,” concludes González Lozano.
