Onza launches into the vertical fiction business with David Ávila

The producer Onza hires showrunner David Ávila to direct a new division specialized in the production of vertical content, in addition to its support in the documentary line.

David Ávila is a creative audiovisual executive, known for, among other titles, when no one sees me (Movistar+), (P)ícaro: Little Nicolás (Netflix), You will be Farruquito (Movistar +), Wake up (RTVE Play) o The 3 Basketeros.

From Onza, a production company known for titles such as The Ministry of Time, Jam, Gluten Free o Hernan, affirm that Ávila's talent and experience, both in audiovisual marketing and in the creation and production of digital formats, reflect exactly the type of profile needed to lead this new division in the production company's content strategy.

"I think we have to understand and embrace new trends. The challenge is to learn how the way of consuming stories evolves and demonstrate that it is possible to produce profitable and quality vertical content," says David Ávila.

On May 27, Room Zero, One of the first vertical fictions created by the new division, has been awarded at Conecta Fiction Mallorca 2026, with the New Art Award, which grants 5,000 euros in post-production services.

This new commitment comes at a time of strong global growth in vertical content and the so-called “microdramas”, formats designed for mobile consumption and characterized by short episodes and highly serialized narrative.

Specialized platforms such as ReelShort, DramaBox, GoodShort or DramaClick have turned this model into one of the fastest growing audiovisual trends internationally, especially among young and mobile-first audiences. The rise of vertical dramas is already reflected in the sector's figures: platforms such as DramaBox exceeded $217 million in revenue in 2024, while the American microdrama market already moves more than $1.3 billion annually.

Onza's CEO, Gonzalo Sagardía, acknowledges that "we are very happy with this incorporation. David is an extraordinarily creative person who brings us many ambitious ideas to address a trend in the market that, as a growing producer, we cannot ignore."
