Agreement between the SGAE and the Association of Video Companies

The agreement aims to modernize the sector and contemplates a series of bonuses and deductions for a business group heavily punished for illegal downloads and intellectual property fraud.

The General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE) and the Association of Video Companies (AEVIDEO) have signed today, Friday, November 27, an agreement to regulate the relations of this group of businessmen with the SGAE, in relation to copyright for the rental of recording media of audiovisual works.

In practice, the agreement contains important bonuses and deductions from the SGAE towards this business sector so severely punished for illegal downloads and piracy. In this sense, among other benefits, reductions in the general rates of the SGAE of up to 15% are contemplated; the deferral of payment of amounts owed for up to one year without interest; freezing rates for three years, as well as a special reduced rate for media vending machines.

José Luis Carrera Peláez, president of AEVIDEO, points out that "the agreement is important for the video sector because it regulates a space that has generated too much controversy between video clubs and the SGAE. We hope that the agreement is fruitful for both parties and that the SGAE is aware of its leading role in the modernization and innovation of the sector."

For his part, Javier Trujillo, commercial director of the SGAE, highlights the significance of the firm: "The close line of action and collaboration between both organizations entails a series of advantages, such as cooperation in those initiatives that aim to respect intellectual property; the development of joint actions to raise public opinion about the importance of copyright in the values ​​and cultural identity of our society, as well as the development of training plans and publications of interest to both parties."
