Google TV will not be the star at CES 2011
For those who expected that, coinciding with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES'11) to be held in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9, Google TV would present with great fanfare an alliance with manufacturers such as Sony (its main supporter) Toshiba, LG Electronics and Sharp... they will see their joy in a well.
For those who expected that, coinciding with the Consumer Electronics Show, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9, Google TV would present with great fanfare an alliance with manufacturers such as Sony (its main supporter) Toshiba, LG Electronics and Sharp... will see their joy in a well.
Although Google continues to work on the development of the software, the reality is that the alliance with Sony has borne its first fruits, already having televisions with Google integrated on the market at a price ranging from $600 for a 24-inch screen to $1,400 for a 46-inch television. Sony and Logitech also sell complementary devices that allow people to take advantage of the Google TV software without having to replace their televisions.
While the new Google ChromeOS operating system for laptops (which also suffered numerous delays) and Android for smartphones are going strong, in the case of television it seems that the multinational is encountering more problems than initially anticipated. Some industry analysts have even dared to justify this retreat by citing a weakness in the company's business culture around managing relationships with partners.
The promise of an Internet television service with the possibility of watching any program or movie, based on a “media pool” concept, whenever the user decides, is far from reality with Google TV. For now, major majors like NBC, CBS, ABC and now Hulu have blocked access to their long-running shows on their websites with Google TV. If the difficulty for them to agree to offer content on alternatives such as video game consoles has become clear, they do not plan to be intimidated when one of the Internet giants intends to enter their business.
