BBC is accelerating the speed at which it is migrating all of its processes into a high-definition environment. To unify criteria, it published an 'HD Production Guide' that included its recommendations throughout the HD workflow. Now, the British broadcaster has unveiled the camcorders approved for high definition production.

The BBC believes that high definition television is more than a future but an imminent reality. Since its first experiences in the middle of the last decade, the British broadcaster has been developing intense high definition production activity. In order to unify criteria throughout the workflow for those HD productions broadcast by its BBC HD channel and on the iPlayer service, it published a HD Production Guide.

Designed to provide an overview of HD, this document is available to all production staff so they can make the best decisions at every step of HD production and understand the consequences of each choice.

Camera approval

Now, the BBC has just made public the list of formats and cameras that the British corporation approves for high definition production.

In this list there are the following cameras: AJ-HPX3700, 2700, 3000 and 2100, Varicam HDC27F and H, and AJ-HDX900 (Panasonic); HDW F900R and 900, HDW 790, 750 and 730, and CineAlta F35 (Sony); D21 and Alexa (YES); Genesis (Vision); and Viper (Grass Valley).

For use in independent productions, the BBC has also approved the Canon XF 300 and 305; the Sony PDW 800 and 700; as well as RED One.

As for mini cameras, BBC recommends the use of the Panasonic HCK10/HMR10, Iconix HD-RH1 and the Toshiba IK-HR1S/IK-HD1.
