BBC Worldwide brings the best of British TV to its fans with the BBC iPlayer app for iPad. This innovative subscription video-on-demand service, which will be launched in 11 markets, will allow access to the British broadcaster's programming.
BBC Worldwide is offering audiences across Europe the first opportunity to enjoy a digital mix of classic and contemporary British programs this week with the launch of the new global BBC iPlayer app, only available on iPad.
This innovative subscription video-on-demand service, launching for the first time in Western Europe, will allow viewers in 11 markets to access the award-winning programming on which the BBC's history and prestige has been built. For €6.99 per month (or €49.99 for an annual subscription), the app will initially be available in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
With an intuitive and easy-to-use design, the application offers a key feature to users: viewing and downloading programs that can be viewed offline, when there is no access to Wi-Fi connectivity. The elegant and simple interface allows users to build a personal program library.
John Smith, Chairman of BBC Worldwide, commented: "This launch is an important route to market in our multi-platform strategy for our brands and programmes, bringing them closer to new digital audiences around the world. Today is a significant step in a digital journey that has already seen 12 million BBC Worldwide apps downloaded across brands as diverse as Lonely Planet o Good Food”.
Jana Bennett, President of Worldwide Networks and Global iPlayer at BBC Worldwide, added: "Building on the huge success of the UK's pioneering BBC iPlayer service, the app combines technical innovation and editorial creativity to take users to the heart of the BBC and British television on a journey of discovery, whenever and wherever they want. We are excited by our idea of what this service can become, and we will improve it based on feedback from the markets."
