The London 2012 Games, for the first time in 3D

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and Panasonic announce an agreement to broadcast the London Olympics in 3D. Live stereoscopic coverage will include the opening and closing ceremonies and more than 200 hours of stereoscopic broadcast. The camcorders that will be used will be the P2HD AG-3DP1.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and Panasonic Corporation have closed a collaboration agreement to broadcast the Olympic Games in 3D for the first time.

The event will be in London 2012, and as initially planned, both the opening and closing ceremonies and a total of about 200 hours of different competitions such as athletics, gymnastics and swimming will be covered in 3D for broadcasters around the world.

OBS, in charge of television production for the Olympic Games, will use Full HD 3D technology developed by Panasonic. The camcorders that will be used will be the P2HD AG-3DP1, with dual lenses and recording on solid state memory cards.

Without a doubt, the broadcast of the 2012 London Games in 3D will mark a historical milestone as already happened with the emergence of color and high definition.
“There is no doubt that the Olympic Games will provide some of the best content for the 3D market in the future, and that 3D TV will change the way we experience this major sporting event in our living rooms,” said Takumi Kajisha, CEO of Panasonic.

For his part, Manolo Romero, CEO of OBS, noted that “the introduction of live broadcasts in 3D will be “one of the most significant steps in the history of sports broadcasting.”
